OK, so here's my first decent high ISO shot with my new D7200. More to come as I keep processing and get used to the new software ... and maybe try some other software as well.

D7200 + 300 f/2.8 VR I
ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/400

PP adjustments = WB, slight tilt (and that is it, no NR, no sharpening)

You would need at least that shutter speed, so you needed iso 3200. How in the world were you ever getting these kind of shots with the D300? Congrats on the new cam. Ergonomically the D300 was perfect for many of us, myself included, under the hood not so much for a long time. You definitely needed a newer sensor to get these kind of shots.

Wow, this looks amazing, no way I'd think this was a crop body. Definitely looks like I will be renting a D7200 soon

Hey Andre,

This is sure looking good! Once the dust settles, I am sure you will be just loving the D7200.

Nice capture of the moment.

Seems like everyone is trying to give Andre the encouragement but not willing to review the truth, I will just go ahead and tell what I am seeing.
First, the picture is out of focus. Maybe needs to perform an AFFT on the camera and lens.
Second, the use of an aperture of f/2.8 on a focal length of 400mm at about 35 yds (judging by the picture) will give you a DOF of about 1.3 ft. Very shallow DOF, so try using f/4.5 will give you a DOF of about 2 ft for the D7200 with the 400mm lens combination, which will keep the main player in full focus.
Thirdly, the shutter speed of only 1/400 is too slow for a camera with the pixel size like the D7200 with a 400mm lens. Try at least twice the focal length or 1/800 to 1/1250 to freeze motion like this.
Now, since you can't keep increasing ISO, why not just leave it at 3200 and do a PP 1 or 2 stop boost to keep the noise level low.
Well, good luck!

Footnote : I used to do football during the 70s and 80s. Yes, college and NFL not soccer or FIFA. But now there is only the American School football team very close to me and not much else.

How about giving him some time to discover how much he can push exposure in PP with a new sensor like this? It's a learning experience for all of us coming from sensor technology from several years ago.

Completely agree with almost everything he is saying.

ISO 3200 is NOT high! Let's see a ISO 6400 & ISO 12,800 to get the shutter speeds up to 1/1000th minimum...1/400th is way too low for football. Don't agree with f/2.8 being too shallow. I shoot night football at f/2.8 exclusively.

Thanks Lora,

I used the exact same settings and just lived with the noise. Thus the reason I was so excited to get a new camera this year that could handle higher ISO values.

This particular game I did not want to push past ISO3200 until I knew how the camera could handle it. And yes, 1/400 is as slow as I want to go.

Before the next game, I intend to play with the ISO values in my back yard using different colored objects and exposure settings to see if lower ISO and pulling in post or if going higher ISO and exposing properly is the better way to go. With the D300, exposing properly was always the better option. I'm not sure with the new tech.

Cheers,
Andre

Thanks for the input.

-- Regarding focus: This image is most definitely NOT out of focus but is tack sharp on the ball carrier.

-- Regarding DOF, a 300mm lens @ f/2.8 with the subject 35 yards away has a DOF over 4 feet. That seems like plenty of DOF to me. YMMV

-- Regarding the shutter of 1/400 ... I partly agree with you, and 1/400 is the lowest I would go. I generally shoot at 1/800 or faster as light allows. I disagree that 1/400 is too slow for football as my images clearly demonstrate. Granted, in some of the faster action shots, a foot may show some blur, but that is not a bad thing in all cases as it implies motion.

-- Regarding the ISO ... there I do agree ... it's a new camera and I need to explore its capabilities. I wanted to start somewhere at an ISO value for which I have experience, and that value was ISO3200. I will testing out pushing and pulling images at various ISO values and I'm sure I will find a good compromise of values.

Cheers,
Andre

Thanks Lora! It's been 8 years since I had a new sensor to learn. I'm amazed at how well the D7200 is doing at IS03200. I took one shot behind the sidelines away from the lights that was a full stop under-exposed and I was able to pull shadow detail out. That NEVER would have happened with my D300.

Clearly I can push the D7200 higher than ISO 3200 ... I just need some time to learn the limits.

A few new images chosen at random to show what the D7200 can do with the settings I chose.

D7200 + 300 f/2.8
ISO3200 @ f/2.8 and shutter at 1/400

Again, no NR or sharpening ... just some WB correction and maybe a crop here or there.

Sorry, somehow I use 400mm instead of 300mm used for the calculation of DOF.
For 300mm @ f/2.8 at 35 yds is about 2.3 ft and for f/4.5 is about 3.65 ft, these are based on the D7200 pixel size and COC. So yes, it should be enough DOF if one is able to track properly with the focus point on the desired spot.
Apologize again for the wrong values used.

I know you're loathe to take advice, andre, but listen to the man: 1/400 is too slow for football. You may get away with it a lot when it's small school football with slow players, but overall it won't get the job done. Blurryness in this case doesn't imply action, it implies you're an inexperienced photographer who won't listen.

Yea, I used 12MP seeing as I'm only ever printing at 8X10 ... honestly at that size 6MP will do :P

But, your point is a good one ... if I want to take full advantage of the 24MP of resolution for larger prints, f/4 could be useful.

Wow, did you see the part where I generally shoot at 1/800 or faster and that I'm testing the new camera .... chill my boy, chill.

I hate to defecate on the parade, but all of them except for the pre-snap shot have motion blur killing sharpness.

Boost the ISO. Why wait? Waiting won't make the high iso magically get better, it'll just give you a bunch of throw away shots.

Agreed ... I'm waiting until next game. Coming from the D300 I did not have a reference to how high I should go. You have to understand, ISO 3200 on the D300 is not usable ... even ISO 1600 is barely tolerable.

So, next game, ISO 6400 with 1/800 ...

For high school I would never go below 1/1000th, college/NFL below 1/1600th for night/indoor or 1/2000th for daylight.
