p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 7D II black frames in bursts?

Took the 7D II and the 500mm f4 out for some action. Camera performed as expected but later when I was doing my usual PP on them I noticed a black frame that appears between some bursts. The bursts consisted of 10 frames followed by a completely black frame. If I shot another burst after that one, another 10 frames followed by a black frame appeared again.

The pics are okay and no other problem was detected. Is this normal? Seems like the buffer fills up this black frame appears, recovering right after and shooting another burst.

I tried to search for something like this but found nothing.

Any ideas or comments?

I've never heard of this happening. sd or cf card, jpeg or raw? is it consistently doing this?

Its RAW. It was not consistent. Other similar bursts did not showed these black frames. Im thinking it may be a CF card issue?

Sounds like a write speed glitch with the big raw files; perhaps the card isn't quite keeping up. Just a wild guess but you should be able to test it at home by motoring off strings of images and see if the problem repeats.

Was the shutter opening? What was the exposure for the bad frames?

I believe the shutter was indeed opening, never saw any abnormality through the viewfinder.

One of the frames shows these settings: ISO 400, f 6.3, 1/4000 sec.

You weren't by any chance using flash? That would be too obvious. This could happen if you were using a low power of flash in the dark, and the flash's battery could keep up only with so many frames before it dropped an exposure.

Aside from that, it does sound like flash card voodoo.

A few weeks ago, I noticed a single black/blank frame after some "extensive" burst shooting;
but I thought it just a "fluke" until reading your post.

Firmware 1.05 mentions fixing a "rare" phenomenon where the "shutter does not release" .

No details though

We just got back from a football game and I have noticed I have several black frames too. I'll have to check the other games in the last week to see if there are any in those games as well.
Firmware 1.0.4

When you update your firmware, let us know if that fixes the issue.

Something to think about...

What lighting scenario do the black frames happen?
Natural or artificial?

We had one frame for a natural light soccer game Saturday. Four black frames during a football game Friday night. I haven't looked at any other games but I know we have several other frames in the week We have had the camera. (Which is being returned BTW). Won't focus.

well you wouldn't see any 'abnormality' through the VF because the mirror would still be acting normal (which blacks out the VF ) but from what you describe it seams the shutter wasn't opening .

It sounds like you have that 'Rare' case mentioned in the new firmware details . well done I don't think ive ever seen anyone with a problem listed as 'rare' in a canon firmware fix

I just shoot two long bursts with the 24-105 and no black frames were detected. Only time will tell though because when that happened I was using the 500m f/4 and also because it really must be rare because in the hundreds (perhaps now thousands) of frames Ive taken this was the first time I saw these black frames of death...!
