These fungi are more related to Puff balls than to typical mushrooms, instead of gills to hold their spores they have sacs. The pore at the top opens up and raindrops landing on the bag cause the spores to puff out.

The Earthstars have these starfish like arms which unfold and arch downwards to lever the spore-containing sac upwards to ensure a wider distribution of the spores.

Two species of earthstar are known to occur at this woodland locality but only one was present yesterday. These were about the size of the palm of my hand.

There is a cross-eye stereo.

The last image shows some buds of more earthstars, to expand and mature. I don’t know quite what the apparent remnants are.

Thanks, Brian.

Only if you enjoy a mouthful of talcum powder.

Actually, if you can find them when the flesh is still firm and white, rarely available, they are reputed to be edible, as are all UK Puffballs.

Harold

Thanks, Jarmo.

The daylight (overcast), for focusing, was very dim under the trees but I had plenty of time.

We educated one dog-walker who had not noticed them.

Thank, for your comments.

I have seen these only three or four times in hunting for mushrooms. There are very seasonal and extremely local. Luckily, we have friends who are mushroom enthusiasts and know this locality well. They were our guides.

Harold, I always enjoy your images from both a photography point of view as well as a biological point of view. You often choose for subjects species that many of don't only overlook but don't even know exist! My hats off to you.

Well done.

Thanks, Tim.

I photographed something today which I didn't know existed but was in my garden. I was almost certain it was something else, until I looked through the viewfinder.
