What you think guys? Sometimes I like it, sometimes not. It protects the lens a lot, I mean, the surface of it is in pristine condition.

I'm thinking that ballhead is ridiculously small for such a beastly lens/body combination...

As for the lenscoat, I like the Realtree variation best. Although I guess it's like with condoms or smartphone cases/display stickers... on the one hand you want to be protected, but the "naked" feel is so much better...

Haven't used one in 12 years. I do have a lenscoat wrap that I have used to help protect the lens in the luggage.

Damn that ball head is small.

I use LensCoat covers on my 500/4L IS, 300/28L IS, and 200/1.8L all the time.

DigiCamo LensCoat covers are on my 70-200 and 300 f4L IS, when I get a 400 or 500 or 150-600 it will as well...just because...I like the feel

I use a Lenscoat as well. Think about a gimbal head for that rig. That ball head makes me cringe when I look at that picture.

One thing about Lenscoat, if you are storing the lens in the trunk, the lens with the Lenscoat doesn't fit that well. A little tight when you close the lid.

I also thought the ballhead was small but believe me, it feels super solid. How hard or easy is to install a bigger ballhead or gimball setup?

Nice setup, Jim!

BTW, just ordered an INDURO gimball head setup.

The lenscoat for my 500ii arrived same day. I took the lens out of the case, admired it for a few minutes then fitted the lenscoat, which has never been removed. The only reason for fitting it was to protect the lens/paint from bumps and scratches and scrapes. All that matters is the paint remains pristine

I, too am a fan of lenscoats; for a while I bought the camouflage versions, but have gradually switched to black with new purchases. I think large black lenses garner less attention than either white or camouflage ones. Since I'm not out in the sun for long periods - no sidelines or baseball shoots - the usual "overheating" that white paint is supposed to prevent doesn't apply...

I actually prefer the feel of the warm softness of the lens coat to the cool metal of the unadorned lens; while driving, I often have my hand resting on whatever lens is occupying the passenger seat next to me...
I know how creepy/weird that sounds, but it's true!

I recently sold a 400 and a 300mm lens, and it was quite pleasant to peel off the cover and reveal all that pristine, untouched white paint underneath. And it definitely affected the price...

Ive decided to leave the Lens Coat in fact later will get a new one since this one is a bit "used".

For now this is my wildlife/birding setup. I have a lot of other stuff including some vintage lenses wich I really like. Some could rival or even surpass modern lenses but they must be used manually, no AF for these guys...

I think you'll like the gimbal action, and the added stability over the ballhead; imagine the horror of the whole top-heavy assembly flopping forward (or sideways) on the tripod...no more! Obviously you're enjoying the new glass!
Enjoy!
