The Whiteman's were an amazing family. I don't know what it was, but my personality just meshed right with the family. I left the shoot feeling very happy being able to do what I do. Enough yappin! Here's some of my favorite glamor shots:

I have a few more snags on the blog.

Lately I've been experimenting with my lenses and I've really been loving the feel of the 85L. It's so different from the 35 (which I usually use) but it really makes beautiful backgrounds look spectacular. So y'all may be seeing a shift in some of my portraiture over the next few shoots

I know I'm old school, but, even though some of these poses are nice and they are fun shots, I still feel that one of the things that sets a truly competent or expert photographer apart from the masses is the ability to make technically excellent images a very high percentage of the time. I don't know if these images came out of the camera this way or were deliberately made this way in post, but to me, the technical aspects are so far off that it makes them seem more like family snaps than photos done by a photographer. Families tend to love shots like this until you show them shots with no blown highlights, decent black levels, acceptable contrast, good color balance, great lighting, etc., at which point they will always chose the better quality photos (assuming the poses, etc. are comparable.

I can see some effort went into these and overall they are nice shots. Keep posting!

Elliot, a bit harsh. Despite the lens distortion, color balance issues (skin a bit orange on my monitor), Michael got the family smiling, photos poses are posed well; candids, nothing too contrived; beautiful family, wonderful smiles. You can't take bad photos in Oak Bluffs (? looks like Martha's Vineyard to me). Keep posting, indeed.

#14 is my favorite of the bunch. They look like a nice, interesting family. It's interesting to see how some girls favor mom and some favor dad.

Elliott is very harsh on these boards lol. no clipping of anything highlights or shadows

I love the photos, they are warm, inviting, shows the entire family is very comfortable and relaxed with out seeming like there is a photographer there in their way.

There is really only one that bothered me and that was the one #13, the crop is odd with the shoulder cut off on camera left. most likely you were in front snapping away trying to get natural expressions and the group as a whole just happen to be to on top of you but you got the expression at the cost of a shoulder lol. Also that photo looks a tad more on the green side. did some cloud cover just come out from no where for a tony amount of time?

I have to agree with Elliott...I think photography has come a long way and current technology makes it much easier to get a well exposed portrait without blown skies and backgrounds. Mixing bright, sometimes blown, backgrounds with light colored clothing makes it tough for your eye to focus on your subject without being drawn to the bright spots of the photo. Also, you have to be careful with your backgrounds when framing the shot, ideally you don't want posts, trees and horizons going through the heads in your portraits.

I tend to be less technical about critiques and just take in the overall set.

I think that there are some examples of a blown out sky or other highlights that I notice but don't destroy the image.

There are some skin tones that are off in a few shots.

There are some crops that I find questionable.

That all being said, I think this is a great set. #14 is a great capture in my opinion. The way I see it these are all at least good shots and I bet that family is more than thrilled. I imagine they will have prints of these proudly hanging on their walls.

If I had shot this set I'd be proud of it. Far from perfect but so is everything else out there.

Job well done.

I wouldn't choose the technically perfect ones. Lots of people wouldn't, and don't.

Hey Elliot, I'm glad you can see that effort when into these photographs and I will certainly keep posting. I do consider myself a photographer. When I capture families/portraits/weddings I am most concerned about capturing genuine raw emotion and the spirit of that individual. I create situations where families interact as they normally would. I don't wait for the moment to happen, I become part of it by interacting with them to the point where they feel 100% comfortable in front of the camera. I do agree I could use some work on the technical side and I'm proud of the improvements I've made this year. I do believe it's a little harsh to say these photographs don't look like they were taken by a photographer. But hey, I understand it's FM and critiques can be cut-throat sometimes.

14 is also my favorite, but I wish I didn't have the plant covering where mom was standing.

Thanks! To be honest, I love the expressions of 13 but I was put off by the framing. I was literally running backwards trying to get them in motion haha. I believe the clouds were coming in and out that day, so I probably went a little to heavy with the green channel on the curves toolbar.

Thanks for the critique! I'll be sure to be more careful with my framing

Thank you! The family was super happy with their images and wrote me a nice review for my website. I absolutely loved working with them. And as mentioned before, I'll be taking some of those points into consideration. Thanks for the critique

You did an outstanding job of capturing expressions and the emotions of this family. I really liked 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12a, and 13 thru 17. You did a terrific job on these! A few notations on several others... On 1, a wider angle lens would have been preferable to get the house and entire bodies in the photo. 5 could have been great if the uninvolved, out of focus girl on the left was out of the picture. On 8, I didn't care for the headless daughters. And as a few others mentioned, the blown highlights should have been fixed in post processing. All in all, a fun set. I'm sure they will highly recommend your services.
