p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Heaven's Reach - 8x10 Film

I took this shot about a month ago now at one of my favorite stretches of the Big Sur coastline. A monsoonal summer storm produced some nice weather for an evening out on the coast. Although I had to battle hoards of ticks, the one sheet I exposed that night turned out just how I had imagined it would.

Let me know what you guys think!

Gotta love film! Lovely exposure...I would have expected more satuated colors with Ektar. Although, with late evening sidelight, maybe not.

Not complaining, mind you.

Very nice!

To be honest, my interpretation might have been to go for a less intense sky/heavier use of the GND.

BUT, I am glad you chose this one as it looks like the Big Sur coast afternoons I know!

Thanks for posting

Thanks! I hardly ever use a 3 stop on Ektar, mainly because I feel like I could almost shoot it straight into the sun with no filter at all and expose sun spots.

I appreciate your feedback though. For shots like this with such heavy side light, I kind of prefer the image going a little bright because it gives a bit more of a realistic feel, personally. There's not a ton of detail in the haze / clouds anyways.

I was actually agreeing with your lighter use of the filter
I should have said "in the past..."
I only have a 2-stop in my bag now as don't like the unbalanced effect of the 3-stop that often results. I've returned to film in the last few years & having to rethink exposures & filters.
Yes, Ektar's range is pretty amazing

Beautiful shot! The composition works very well, and I like how you timed the wave impact with the large rock. This is definitely a good use of Ektar. Slide film would have made it a bit more tricky with the bright sunset sky. My only suggestion would be to reduce the magenta just a bit. I like the warmth of it, but it feels a hair too magenta.

Thanks Ben! I definitely see the magenta now that you mention it. After sitting in front of it for a while, sometimes I blind myself to a color. Appreciate the feedback, for sure.
