The list of lenses that Canon "recommends" for use with the 5Ds only includes lenses that Canon is currently producing. That means that truly excellent lenses like the 300/2.8 IS and 500//4 IS are not on the list.

I don't own a 5Ds, and others who have used the 5Ds with the 400 DO may be able to respond better than I can, but the 5Ds and 7D Mark II have virtually identical pixel densities, and I would expect that the performance of those two bodies at the pixel level would be very similar. I've been using the 7D Mark II and 400 DO together for about 9 months, and I couldn't be more pleased with the combination. I feel like the two were meant to be used together, and it is hard for me to imagine that the 5Ds and the 400 DO would not perform similarly well.

Every single EF lens from $13,000 down to $100 will show increased resolution on the 5Ds compared to any other Canon FF body and all crop bodies except the 7D2 which is about equal. Sure some crappy lenses will only show a small increase and the 5Ds will show more flaws of each lens but there is no reason not to use any lens on the 5Ds/R. I'm sure that the excellent 400DO will perform great on the 5Ds as many have shown how good it is on the 7D2.

Don't know if you mean the DO II or not but I have a few shots with the DO II and a 5DSR. I'm pleased with the results.

The beauty is in the eye of “bee holder” who should be holding a bee with great care mindful of bee stings.
PetKal in other thread started another meaningless superteles contest: “Mirror, mirror on the wall … which is the fairest of them all?” based on his field shots and from a hand held gear to make it even more meaningless.
I suspect this is a way to boast about the gear ownership or to post pictures.

The only person who can answer your question is YOU. Try it and make your own conclusion.
Still, if you insists, I find it exceptionally good (with 5Ds R) and if you believe that looking at pictures on the net can help (which is another baloney), then I may post a link if you ask.

For those of you who own the 400 DO ll, I'm wondering how the AF SPEED performs with a 1.4 lll attached using either a 1DX or 5D3

Does the speed take a significant hit or is it acceptable enough for BIF shots?

Thanks

I own 400DOii, have used it on 5Diii. Currently use it on 7Dii. My opinion, you will be hard pressed to tell that the cTC1.4iii is on, e.g. no loss of AF speed or IQ.
The real question is whether the 5Diii will have the frame rate YOU need for BIF. I've done BIF with my 6D and an EOS 28-300 ~attitude is everything~ so no doubt the 5Diii is capable. No need to even address the issue with the 1DX.
One thing you'll love about the DO is the 'wieldability' of it.

calling Petcal - this seems to be a natural topic for him to comment upon; he has the 400 DO II (and had the version 1 as well); and has other version II telephotos
