First time shooting volleyball with my (New to Me) 300mm F2.8
SS was 1/640 at F2.8 at ISO 8000
I see #24 is sharpest so I was wondering if she was maybe moving slower than the other 2 girls
as I focused on the #10 in the red on that side of the net.
My first thoughts after calculating I had 2.78 ft of DOF from 70 ft. up in the bleachers
was that maybe she was farther back than I had prefocused.

I said in another thread I hoped not to shoot like a slow old man.
Any comments appreciated. Thanks for your time, Ken.

OOF 100%.

You would not see motion in the players face, at the peak of her jump in theory she is not moving very fast. Her hand and the ball (the two items moving the fastest) do show signs of motions blur.

With 1DX and 300 2.8 why are you pre-focusing? I would track the player you want in the photo and then fire away and let the camera and lens do their thing.

Thanks, I will try to follow focus next time. What is the minimum SS you would use?
Any reason the G of Gators and 2 of 24 on the right hand girls jersey are the sharpest thing in the photo?
Thank you for your reply. First time shooting the 300.

Ken, I don't pretend to be an expert, but...

1/800th is as low as I like to go, and I only drop down to that to keep ISO below 12800 (on a D600, 70-200/2.8).

And yes, allow the camera to focus, single point, unless the light allows you to use F4 or so for better depth of field / pre-focusing...I have never found a circumstance in a high school gym where I can use anything above F3.2.

Also, I have found DXO's "prime" noise reduction to work very well for images taken at 8000+...gives me maybe 1/3rd to 1 more stop to work with (as opposed to LR's noise reduction).

If you look at the stitching in the top white vinyl of the net, you can find your focal plane. For some of them, it appears that the red player is just behind dof. I don't think the yellow players are more in focus, don't let the contrast of the numbers fool you.

Try tracking the players on their legs under the net so they are tracked while elevated,.

Thanks, I did focus on their legs under the net while on the floor.
From above as with these shots I focused on the faces but I'm thinking she was further back while hitting the ball.
I'll try to get the camera to lock on and follow next time.
Thanks everyone!

Jay, first time with the 300
I've shot a little volleyball but not a lot, maybe 6 games or less in my lifetime.

This is just echo now but 1/800th minimum and let the camera do the work with single point focus set one or two points above center. The 1Dx was born for this job.

It is not motion blur. Neither #10 nor #24 are in focus. On the first shot, the top of the net on the far right is the focal point. Don't know if you cropped this or not, but if the original shot extends beyond what you have on the left, my guess is that it's even sharper past the point of crop. But 24 is definitely not the focal point.

On the second shot, the ball is the sharpest which coincidentally would show the least amount of sharpness had motion blur been the culprit. You're just missing the focus point on these.

Other folks have already answered your question, but in case you are interested, there have been a lot of useful discussions about shooting volleyball here over the years. Here's a list of links I keep handy:

thinking of covering a couple of volleyball matches. Wondering if anyone uses strobes? I would love to think that if one strobes basketball in the same venue, they could also strobe volleyball.

Do a search, there are several posts/threads about using strobes for volleyball.
