Any critique is welcome. I would love to improve on portrait shots. I feel like I don't have a creative eye but I'd like to get better. Thanks for looking.

1. unfortunate that you cut off her hands and feet! Face a bit bright.
2. to be a tad brutal, too much room above her head and the bright area distracts. Dodge or square crop? The top of her head looks too bright.
3. again the little rapids steal the show. I think I'd crop off the top 1/4
4. see, in this image, the water is darker; good. But ya cut off his fingers. I'd be tempted to crop to portrait orientation, at his sleeves.
5. snapshot-ish. Maimed again. Nice dof, and you have their complete attention. Lighting and processing are so much better in the other images.
6. the winnah! Now that is one cool card. I'm not sure about the smoke. Behind him, I understand, but in front, I don't.

It's obvious that your beautiful children trust and love you. Good work, keep shooting.

1. A bright object in your background will distract the viewer.

2. When there is nothing of interest above your model's head, consider cropping the emptyness away. Later, you will compose to do that before clicking.

3. Arms and legs 'cut off' is usually not best.

4. Forced smiles look like, well, forced smiles. Some photographers have a knack for getting natural looks.

Your #6 is looking good! Nice natural expression.

Your #5 has really bright light from the side - a bit too bright.

Cute kids.

These all have the classic look of the novice who places th head of the subject squarely in the center of the frame. Move beyond this and learn about the rule of thirds. Your photography will take a big leap with very little effort.

Thanks for the honest feedback! I enjoy sports photography the most because they are just doing what they do and I don't have to pose or anything. But I'd like to take some better pictures of my family.
