Don't know if there's one best way. But I'll start with the camera on a tripod, mirror up, 3 second delay, remote release, single point AF, use live view. Find a nice target with decent contrast. Take a few shots. Make sure VR is off. Tune at the most frequently used focal length. Use the best as the benchmark. That should be your best. Eliminates human error for the comparative.
Then turn off live view and start adjusting via viewfinder until you get as close to the comparative as possible.
