I see a lot of negative reviews on this lens, but it is actually a good one. Yeah it is a tad soft and low in contrast, but that can be fixed. Tonight I took a photo of the 1st quarter moon with this lens attached to my D810 and I like the detail I got from it. I did have to use live view to focus though and I mainly bought this lens ($189 from B&H) for use on my AstroTrac. It is about 4" in aperture so there is a good bit of light grasp. Anyway, here is my shot of the moon from this evening.
This lens is also good for video recoding of distant scenes and objects. Anyway, I thought I'd share. The slight bluish color at the terminator (shadow line) is from the blueness of the sky. It was not totally dark yet when I took this, it's not an issue with the lens.

I think that is pretty good for the price. I also think given the softness of this lens your editing skills should be given even more kudos.

Very good indeed for such a cheap lens. Did you do a lot of post processing on this one ?

Hey Guy, not too much. I did add a little sharpening and contrast, to the shot, and a little noise reduction. I used Lightroom to process the image since Nikon Capture NX2 no longer opens raw files from the D810. I don't recall the exact settings, but I can get them. The lens does well when focused carefully.

Many people complained that Samyang mirror lens are very difficult to focus, is that true?

Not if you use live view fully zoomed in. Otherwise it is hard to do handheld. You need a tripod. This lens is very much like a telescope.

I wonder if you'd get a sharper shot if the lens had a foot or something. How heavy is it?

That is definitely possible. The lens itself weighs about 2 pounds and balances pretty well on the camera. With the lens hood on the lens, it is easily shaken by the wind or any other vibrations because 800mm is pretty long focal length, and that is why I use my MC – 36 Nikon electronic cable release with mirror lock up and front curtain sync. There are several good YouTube reviews on this lens, go check them out.

I wonder how much piccure+ would improve the apparent sharpness of this lens? (I think you can download a trial version and try it out)

Looks great! I'll look into it, hopefully it will work with Mac, I haven't read that far into it yet. Thanks for the link, never heard of that before.

Hey Mike....

Here is what Piccure did for the moon. I ran the raw file through lightroom first with basic settings to convert the file to jpg because piccure+ didn't handle the raw file very well, it was over exposed. Since this is a trial version, I could not save the photo... I was only able to take a screen shot.
