p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Ground Hugger

Being less than 6 months old this little cub was lacking confidence even with mom pretty close by. I do suspect there were a few more vehicles present than should have been and its obvious body posture shows that pretty well. After getting about 30 shots off with it looking at us, but only a couple dead on, it hid behind a fallen tree and mostly out of sight. I hate stressing out any of the animals I see but especially the young ones who are just beginning to get habituated to the vehicles.
By hugging the ground it was making itself look smaller and I guess hope it wasn't spotted....but for a leopard, that's quite impossible
I hope you all can tolerate my black and white period...I'm finding it an interesting way to view nature and makes one look at detail and shading in a completely different way.
Eric

Eric,

The monochrome conversion is excellent. But what intrigues me is the relationship of your camera to the subject. It appears that you are using the "Karl Witt" technique of getting down low, which I thought would be impossible on an African adventure.

Hope to see more of these,

Mike

Hey Mike, I absolutely subscribe to the Karl Witt school of the low down It is almost impossible in East Africa where the vehicles, for the most part, have pop up tops and windows that slide open....in Southern Africa, the vehicles are often open Land Cruiser/Land Rovers and one can lie down on the seat or if thin enough (and i was just barely) on the floor and shoot on the door frame ledge. That will get you low enough especially if you are a bit further away...it's all angles and geometry...so closer isn't always better!

Thanks Lance...I always hope to get this angle...a great guide who understands what you are trying to accomplish is so so important.

Thanks Birdie...it was so small and vulnerable looking...I was really chuffed to be able to get a clear view when she turned and looked directly at me.

Thanks Don....I am finding black and white to be increasingly interesting and will continue to try to find a "style" I can go to for appropriate images. I love color too and when the lighting is right it is indeed glorious....embrace your "blue period" and then move on to some other of the primary colors.
