During a fungus foray at the weekend, one of the group found this. It was motionless, about knee high, on the bark of the trunk of a Sweet Chestnut tree. It was about an inch (25mm) long.

It looks like a hunter but its abdomen looks more like that of a wood borer.

I have not yet found any similar images to help me to identify it.

EM-1 Kiron 105mm, f11, flash, hand-held.

Interesting find. Looks like a rove beetle infected with a fungus ?

Thanks, Brian.

That kind of thing had not occurred to me. The search continues.

Thanks, Kurt.

Irrespective of whether the abdomen is abnormally swollen, the thorax seems exceptionally narrow, perhaps suggesting that the adult has non-functional wings.

Thanks very much Mike. I felt that there was something neuropteran about it but I hadn't heard of the group.

It seems that three of the four UK species are confined to conifers, which were absent in the wood, the other being associated with oak, which was present.

That makes it Phaeostigma notata syn. Raphidia notata. I will modify the topic title.

Thanks, Mark.

The advantage of being with a group is that you sometimes find more interesting things.

I must go back and look for adults and more larvae on oak trunks. The adults fly over low vegetation in sunny weather. The life cycle takes two years and the size of adults suggests that this one was +/- mature.

Ah, okay, yes, the head does remind me of a snakefly. We don't get them here though.

I had been going to say that you must get lots in your patch!
