I have a Canon 6D and 24-70/4L IS that I sometimes use for landscape type shots. Usually 24mm is wide enough, but on a recent trip I wished I had something wider. I would consider a prime of about 20mm or of course a wide angle zoom. Given my usage fast lenses are of no real interest. It seems the 17-40/4 does a good job stopped down to f8 or f11. I had one once, but sold it because my only camera then was a crop camera. Everyone says the 16-35/4 is better, but looking at lens tests I don't see any real difference at the apertures I would be interested in. Any other ideas? Any 3rd party lenses I should think about? I'd like to keep the budget around $500 or so and buying used or refurb is no problem.

The reason you don't see much difference between the 17-40 and 16-35IS stopped down is because there isn't much, if any.

If you need IS then the 16-35 has a very good IS system but I managed for years with only a 17-40L and didn't suffer at all.

If you want a sharp, fantastic value wide prime consider the 20mm f2.8 which is extremely good stopped down, even though the corners go a bit at wider apertures. It has quite a poor reputation so is very cheap used, but if you are going to stop it down it does the job well, especially with lens profiles

I'll recommend the Tokina 17mm 3.5 lens. The one I purchased was a Contax mount, so I use a cheap adapter and must use it as a manual lens. However I use this lens stopped down, usually at f8 so manual is not much of an issue. I'm very impressed with the lens. I tested this lens against several others, and it has better sharpness across the frame than the Canon 20mm, the Nikon 20mm 2.8 AIS and also the highly regarded Tokina 11-16mm 2.8. The best news is the 17mm Tokina can be picked up used for under $200. And it does come in a Canon mount.

I will say 16-35 f/4 has better IQ, color and sharpness

Visit Lenstip.com to see test results on most lenses. That Canon 17-40mm zoom fairs quite well.

This is a great resource for lens tests.

Canon's 16-35 f/4L IS is sharper, but at f/8 or f/11 there isn't a big difference compared to the 17-40 or even the earlier 16-35 f/2.8 lenses. But the edges/corners at f/4--oh, baby! Huge difference. And the IS function is solid and useful.

Invest for the future and be done with buying/selling. Get the 16-35 f4 L IS and enjoy the shooting with best lens in the class. I know it's above your budget, but I think it's worth saving for a few more months.

Myself, I bought 16-35 f2.8 L II shortly before the IS version was released. Imagine my anger - consitently better corner performance, IS and cheaper as well....

There is really very little difference in edge IQ between the 17-40L and the 16-35IS stopped down in real life use.

Well, the results posted by Jcolwell show quite a dramatic real world difference between 16-35 IS and 16-35 II (that's supposed to be a little bit better than 17-40). The resolution might be roughly the same, but the IS corners are "less fuzzy, less stretched...." I don't know how to describe them better. Even on 5Ds samples, which many people trashed, the 16-35 IS looks impressively good in the far corners. The samples of 17-40 on 5Ds looked like hell, but that also probably had to do with the fact they were taken by an incompetent photographer.

I say why not invest a bit more and buy a lens, that looks very good on the 50mpix body, is the same speed and has IS as a bonus for those times when you can't use a tripod (in a museum for example....). The OP wants to use it on a 6D, but bodies come and go. Why not do a future-proof upgrade?

All I am saying is don't believe all the hype about the 16-35IS, yes it's a good lens and the IS makes it much more usable for me for things like social events, but the actual stopped down IQ is not really very different from the 17-40L, really it isn't. Maybe I had a good one, but I always found the 17-40L better than the press it gets.

The 17-40mm is a lackluster lens. The previous 16-35mm f/2.8 is also poor in the corners, even when stopped down. The 16-35mm f/2.8 II has serious problems with de-centering. LensRentals found that over 1/3 were unacceptable when brand new. Speaking of which, I bought two copies of the 16-35mm f/4L IS and one was badly de-centered. The second one was OK, but not stellar.

The best wide angle zooms on Canon full frame are the 11-24mm if you have 3 grand to spend, or the Nikon 14-24mm with an adapter if you don't mind manual focus.

Zeiss primes are another option (18mm and 21mm).

Whatever you buy, make sure to test carefully.

I had the 17-40 f4, the 16-35 f2,8 II and now I have the new 16-35mm f4 IS. The new lens is clearly the best of them and I bought it because my previous ultra-wides were visibly not sharp on the sides- at any apperture. I mean seriously sharp-like the new 24-70 f 2,8 II. The 16-35mm f4 IS is a big improvement in image quality and is aclually sharp all accross the frame. Maybe I had bad copies of the lenses but I donīt think so. The 16-35mm f2,8II was very nice and almost perfectly sharp at around 20 mm and f 8-11. But 16mm really sucked...

Wrong again. Don't believe all the new hype about how the 16-35 IS is not that much better. I have had both lenses and compared them side-by-side. On full frame the 16-35 IS has better contrast, better color, better micro-contrast, is sharper everywhere (especially the edges), creates better sunstars, focuses faster and more accurately.

The 17-40 is a great lens for the money. But the 16-35 IS is the sharpest UWA zoom Canon makes in that range. If you want the best Canon UWA zoom get the 11-24, but that sounds way out of your price range.

For the budget, a used 17-40 is your lens. It's a fine lens.

With the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 out, the Canon 16-35mm is less attractive to me. The Tamron is quite sharp, virtually no coma, and has IS. It is heavy and cannot accept front filters.

How can an opinion be 'wrong' ? Are you some sort of oracle? Or just very big-headed?

I'll give my opinions as I like, based on actually owning and extensively using the gear if you don't like them then just use the hide me button

Tokina AT-X 17/3.5. No doubt.

(I'm at O'Hare, hoping to get out before the T-storms get bad; fragmented attention)

Although informative, the Canon wide angle 'versus' discussion is not too relevant here given the budget.
Jim has pregnant ideas and one is wide to consider his advice although I have never used this lens.
I have the over OP's budget Tamron which is very nice. The limited coma and f/2.8 makes it a great night sky lens.
