p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sending back my Yongnuo 35mm, what next

I had heard good things about it so I ordered it as soon as I saw it available for the MSRP. Unfortunately, I am not impressed. I am probably spoiled for sharpness by the excellent Canon's I have. The 70-200 f/4 is super sharp, the 85 1.8 is pretty good for portraits, the 24-105 is excellent, and even the lowly 50 1.8 II has been pretty good for me, personally. I wanted to try a 35mm prime and the focal length did not disappoint at all. I noticed that my photos looked different and f/2 gave me nice DoF as well. But the lens is a little soft shooting at f/2. It starts to look sharp at f/4 and up. Maybe it was a bum piece I received. But I have decided to send it back.

I am wondering if I should get:
1. old model 35 f/2. I don't care for the IS. if the lens is sharp wide open, I am good.
2. 35 f/2 IS. It is just a tad over budget. But I might just break down and pay for it - especially used somewhere.
3. Can't afford the 35 1.4 so that is out. I have seen plenty of shots in Apple store from this lens to know what it can do.
4. And this is where things get confusing - 40 STM. It is cheap and has good reputation. I am wondering if 40mm would feel close enough to 35 (good) or close to 50 (bad since I own 50).
5. 28 1.8 used. Not sure how sharp this one is. But I guess it can double up as a night sky shooter as well
6. Rokinon 24 1.8. This is supposedly good for shooting stars. It is sharp wide open but manual focus only. So it probably won't be a good scratch for my 35 itch.

Any other EF lenses? This is for my 6D. Thanks for any recco.

Get either the 35/2 or 35/2 IS. The 35/2 is much smaller with pretty good image quality. The 35/2 IS is a bit better for flare resistance, corner sharpness, and contrast. It has much better AF consistency and speed. You can get the 35/2 IS for a decent price occasionally through Canon refurb sales.

You won't be disatisfied with the 35 IS. Skip the older one.

Every 35mm lens I've used has been excellent. Canon 35mm f/2 (old), Canon 35mm f/1.4, Sigma 35mm f/1.4 and an obscure Tokina 35mm macro. Haven't used the newer IS one, but all reports are that it's a fantastic lens .

Unlike the 50mm focal length, the 35mm focal length seems to be chalked full of gems.

Either Canon 35 f/2 will be much sharper than that Yongnuo joke lens. The Yongnuo 50mm was decent for the price, but the 35 is just junk.

I owned a Canon 40mm STM f/2.8 at one point myself, and it was a very nice lens, but seeing how I do a lot of wide angle shots, I couldn't justify having a 50mm and a 40mm. The 40mm is cheap enough now that you can buy a mint condition used one for ~$100 and resell it if it's just not for you.
