p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New to me 120-300, and a great game

Was in the local photo shop trading in a SIgma 50 (focal length never worked for me) when the manager mentioned he had just received a 120-300OS in trade (wildlife shooter picked up a Sigma 150-600 C). Had a realistic price, and I've been hunting for this lens for awhile. An hour later I was out of the store with a grin. Had to wait a week to get out and start the learning process - wasn't expecting much, but in the end I was happier than ever to shoot a great semi-pro game - not much passing, but some awesome runs, and a very strong defense.
All were shot with a 7100, 120-300, some with a 1.4x, all at 4.0, and a gradually increasing ISO, starting at 640 and ending at 2500. Of course, lots of struggles, (Focus tracking is really different at this range - I haven't figured out whether to just shut it off, or to keep it on a bit to hold as the inevitable player steps into the shot) but I had alot of fun.

Comments, crits welcome.

By focus tracking being different, are you saying it's a little slow? This lens' default setting for Autofocus speed is to prioritize accuracy over speed, which I think is pretty dumb for a sports lens. The solution to this is to buy/borrow the sigma USB dock and change the settings around. Since yours was bought used, God knows what strange settings the previous owner put into the lens, and that could be causing your problems. I have this lens for my D3S and D600, and the lens was set to speed priority, I never had a problem again.

The Focus tracking I am referring to is an in-camera setting that keeps focus on your target for a variable length of time...so when a player/ref etc. crosses in front of the player you are shooting, it holds focus on your guy. When I was shooting with a 200 the wide field of view allowed me to better hold focus - or at least I was more used to it. When shooting so much tighter, I can't anticipate someone stepping into the focus zone....but shooting so close, they're out of the frame quicker, as well. I've heard guys who always keep Focus tracking off, in all circumstances, and others who never turn it off......
