p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Best IQ 70-200 w/ TC or 200-500 5.6

Looking for some feedback. I am thinking about purchasing the new 200-500. I have the 70-200vrii with 1.4 TC on a D800. I shoot landscapes and sometimes full moon landscapes where I need a little more reach. Will i get image quality as good with the new 200-500 as i am with my current setup? I am not concerned with being at 5.6 with the 200-500 since i would be at that aperture or higher with my current set up for most images. I realize that the 200-500 does not have Nano coating but i am hoping that the image quality will still be good due to newer technology

Image samples from 200-500 look very promising(im more impressed by 200-500 than new 24-70/2.8 vr). But that means nothing. Wait for the proper reviews. I think IQ wise 70-200 vr2 w/TC vs 200-500 with be very similar. Difference might be in AF performance.

Hard to say before the lens has been released, but judging by similar cases I'd guess that the 200-500 will be somewhat better than the 70-200 with 2x tc, and fairly close to the 70-200 with 1.4x tc. The big advantage is the extra range on the long end which you'd need to stack tcs to get to with the 70-200.

No one would know the answer since no one has the 200-500 yet. But if I have to guess, the 200-500 will have the upper hand. Although I have and use TC's, I'm not a big fan of them when critical IQ is sought.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that the 200-500 will be better than a 70-200/2.8 with 2.0 TC. Likely faster AF too. Won't know for sure until the objective tests though.

I would expect that the difference will be greatest in terms of autofocus performance. I have seen that with my 70-200mm f2.8 lens with the 2x TC as compared to the 80-400mm f5.6 VR II lens, with the latter being significantly faster.

The trade-off is between having f2.8 and 70-200mm focal length options as compared to a single lens that goes past 400mm to 500mm. In many shooting situations I do not want to take off a lens and add a teleconverter and then reattach the lens to the camera. Overall the 80-400mm is the most versatile lens when compared to the 70-200mm with a 2x teleconverter or the 200-500mm f5.6 lens.

If I owned the 70-200mm and was trying to decide between the 80-400mm and the 200-500mm I would probably go with the 200-500mm lens to get the 56% larger image size one gets at 500mm versus 400mm and rely on the 70-200mm when I wanted a focal length less than 200mm.

While owning the new 80-400mm f5.6 lens I find myself using the 70-200mm lens very little and primarily for landscape photography. I have ordered the 200-500mm lens and will decide after having an opportunity to test it in the field whether or not to sell the 80-400mm lens. For overseas travel in general I would rather take the 80-400mm than the 70-200mm along with the 200-500mm lens. The exception would be a trip to a place like Alaska or Yellowstone to photograph wildlife where the 70-200mm along with the 200-500mm would be my choice.

I think that Nikon did well by its customers in making this focal length zoom selection as it has meant for a much lighter and less expensive lens that has the potential to provide excellent high quality images. Time will tell if this is actually the case.

As someone who's been very unimpressed with the 70-200 + 2X combo, I'd say the 200-500 will likely have the edge. It seems like a good theory to use the 70-200 with a 2X, but I never liked the IQ of the combo.
