It's notorious for the rubber grips coming off, the IQ isn't up to the same level as the Canon version (not sure how it compares to your 24-105) and it doesn't have VR so the extra stop of light is offset by higher SS necessary. I'll hold off on listing the advantages though.

I've owned the 24-70 from the beginning and have never had a problem with the rubber grip coming off. BTW, what does it matter how the lens compares to Canon's version, unless you feel that the perceived difference is worth switching gear. The only issue I've encounter is the screws coming and causing the mounting flange to come off.

That lens has been a main-stay in event/wedding photography.

i agree.
no grip issues
no mechanical issues
considering i had the canon 24-105/4 i'll disagree. good but no cigar. its similar to my 24-120/4 though. so many things in life are perception.
just plain works.

You're not doing a very good job at convincing the fellow to stick with his 24-105 and not buy the 24-70...

Not trying to, just felt like giving the 24-70 a little love. In reality, I think I shoot my Fuji XT-1 more than the D4s at this moment.

I'd love to get one, especially since I shoot a lot of low-light work, and also got into Unit Stills Photography less than a year ago, which I love. I just couldn't afford that lens way back when
With two D700 bodies as well, I'm doing well with the lenses I have that I'd bought, used, in the meantime for other low-light options (28mm f/1.8G, 50mm f/1.8G, 85mm f/1.8G, AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8), and quite happy with these, but yes, I'm still kind of eyeing one of those 24-70 (as other Unit Stills photographers swear by them) for the versatility too. I've waited this long, so waiting for them to be ~$1000 or less, like others have said, won't hurt me. :-)

Can you clarify this? Are you saying that the 24-70 is better than the Canon 25-105, but similar to the Nikon 24-120?

I'm happy I sold mine a few months ago as it had around 30% more value than today.

I also sold my 35mm and 24mm 1.4's. The 24mm value has been killed by the 1.8 and there is little to no demand for the 35mm.

Not easy to get rid of DSLR gear today at the price you might think its worth.

I agree. There seems to be many factors effecting both Canon and Nikon resale price. One might be more care being exercised in spending disposable income. Another could be the impact Sony, Fuji and Olympus IQ, system weight, and innovation have on the SDLR market.

funny, I was thinking of picking one up.....I've had the 24-120/4 for about a year and while it's a very nice lens it doesn't "do it" for me...

great walk around lens though.

in my opinion the 24-70/2.8 is a higher performing lens then the canon 24-105/4 was on equivalent bodies overall when used in the same conditions. the canon 24-105/4 gave me similar results to that of my nikon 24-120/4 again on equivalent bodies used in the same conditions. none of these lenses are slouches in use. the canon 24-105/4 was my most used lens when i worked with canon equipment.

I really wish that Nikon had a 24-70 4.0.VR like Canon does. That would make a great lightweight, full frame kit with the 70-200 4.0 VR.

I have the Nikon 24-120 4.0. But that isn't the greatest lens. Certainly not in the same class as the 70-200 4.0 VR, which is fantastic!

Ahh, ok. That's what I figured, just wanted to be clear. I have always wondered what the Nikon 24-120 is like, just haven't used it.

I really want to try the 70-200 F4, but I cant get my hands on it. None of the local stores carry it. The Canon 70-200 F4 was my favorite lens that I used when I shot with my 5Dc, so one of these days I will finally get a chance to try the Nikon F4.

I bought one on eBay for $850 shipped. It was a used one, a Nikon USA Refurbished that the seller had purchased in March 2015. He had very detailed pictures, a copy of the receipt, and a 30 day return period.

He seems like a very decent and professional person with good sales history. I think that he had paid $1,100 for it as a refurbished unit in March, according to the receipt.

No warranty, as Nikon only has a 90 day warranty on refurbished. If you look at "Sold" items on eBay, that seems to be the going price, including almost new ones. But they take a while to show up. Henry's in Canada has had some that sold for around $800, probably because they are "imported." They are a great shop that you can trust.

I have FoCal 2.0 software that I use to test the lenses that I buy, so that helps a bit with my confidence. The new 2.0 version includes comparisons with their database of tests, so you can see teh relative sharpness of your copy. A very nice feature! (Can you tell that I am a bit obsessive?)

+++

They seem to run a bit more here, with people asking $950 or more. Some items on FM run more than is reasonable at times, like $1,000+ for a 2-3 year old Nikon D600, or $1,100+ for a D610, when you can buy a refurbished D610 with 6 months warranty from Robert's, or from Adorama, for $1,050 or $1,100. So you have to shop around a bit.

As others have said, the Nikon 24-120 and Canon 24-105 are pretty decent lenses, especially if you stop down for landscape or similar.

I shoot wide open almost exclusively with the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 II at events, where I am already at ISO 3200 or 6400 and would prefer to be at a faster shutter speed, so I still need the 2.8. But I don't like to carry it around for day-to-day use.

I also used the Canon 24-70 2.8, and 2.8 II, in the studio as my primary lens for 10-15 years. I got a little spoiled by that lens, including shooting wide open for effects. But the 2.8 zooms represent pretty big investment!

Good luck!

I always thought I'd be the two bodies guy but that's not going to happen. Really tempted by the old 24-70 after reading the so-so reviews on the updated version (and, of course, the price drop).

Only thing holding me back is that half the reviews (BH etc) give it a thumbs down for reliability. Even though this is just a hobby for me taking family photos, I am OK spending thousands but only if it's stellar and reliable.

Seems to be "it's my go to lens" until "broke and Nikon can't fix it"

Meh... i sold my 24-70 and dont miss its size or weight. 24-120 with a prime is more versatile. If you need to cover an event just bring two bodies and slap on the 85g and the 35g on each. Extra stop of light compared to the 24-70 and better image quality. But i might get the 24-70 again if it ever comes down to sub 1000

Exactly my thoughts

Owned the canon II version. It was a flawless lens, for a zoom. But in that range I greatly prefer my primes.

Supply of used seems very ample here must be the many anxious owners who want to unload for the new VR version I can expect prices to fall more as we hear great things about it!

Locally in my small corner of the NW I see 24-70s and much lower prices than just 6 months ago with the lowest now 1K.

My belief things will hopefully stabilize with the Beast holding the bottom, the 24-70 in the middle. I can't imagine that the 24-70 is 1300 bucks cheaper value than the new VR at ~ 2300.

Like many others, I've had 24-120 since it still sold for $1,000 (3 yrs ago damnit!!). It's better than any kit lens from any manufacturer. To boot, I love having nice glass that sits there so it won't get over used. Seriously, and found open box 24-70 at local Target (of all joints) for $1,159!!!! Loved it, but knew I could pocket difference from nice 28-70 and be happy...knowing I was stuck with huge loss on 24-120. 24-70 does have negative points... All Rooms do. It has some distortion at widest... And falloff. Nice aesthetics..not meant to go on annual African aafaria a with clumsy owners. This lens will break in half if dropped like equivalent Tokina or nearly any AF-D f/2.8 lens. Upside? Many. But Not worth $1200/used, to me. Parts are abund. Repairs? High as a cat's arse. Ciao

The nikon 24-70mm G (non-VR, I know nothing about the VR version) produces very poppy images and has great bokeh for a zoom (imho).

Maybe I should upgrade the beast, since prices are come down on 24-70. Anybody still using the 28-70?
