I want to download DPP in order to move a Picture Style to the camera. However, the serial number is needed to download the software, and the number is worn away from the camera. I don't have the serial number in the camera box. The "vers.req" trick from the Canon compact cameras don't seem to work.

What should I do to be able to download the program?

Look for one for sale online and just enter the serial.

See that's genius. Thanks, Rusty.

Yes, the serial number for the camera is in the RAW file.
on a Mac open the image and select CTRL I

The Canon program EOS Utility can display serial number as well

Interesting point ... folks are often times neglect in recording Serial Numbers for police / theft / insurance purposes, so a review of such files can provide the info.

IIRC, you can also note the Serial numbers in DAM programs as well, for instance when sorting files from a given camera. More than one way to skin this cat.

Now, as before, I am still scratching my head as to why Canon uses a serial number input intercept during the process to download software which is in great part only applicable to specific Canon products.

Who else would want their programs besides earnest users like myself? Pentaxians? Olympians?

My guess is it is for data tracking purposes so they can tell if Rebel users or 1 Series or 5,6,7 vs. 50,60,70 series users are most prolific users of their software to garner a better understanding of which aspect of their customer base they are serving with it.

It really is quite a (seemingly) useless limitation, but if you're really lazy you could just do a Google search for "canon 5d mark iii bottom" and you're done.

You can always do it the nice way as described above of course

That's an interesting angle, actually. Taking it further, DPP 3.x and 4.x are internet-enabled so they can download the DLO modules. I wish the modules could be standalone files but that's a different subject.

What I'm getting at, is that what if DPP could (can) already tell Canon about your body/serial number/lens/accessory combinations and recipes, preferred output file types, sizes, use of DLO or auto lighting optimizer, etc. etc.

That would be interesting data for them, no? To heck with who downloads it...who is using it and how?

Most likely it is because they have agreements with the owners of code included in DPP that specify royalty payments on a per-user or per-camera basis. If they allowed free-for-all downloads there would be no way to report and account for said payments.
