I had stopped feeding our garden birds, as their feeding activities had declined, it being August. Anyway, some of the local Feathered Mafia hassled me and I started putting food out again. It was 6.30 am and I noticed a coloured blob on a leaf of the Hazel bush adjacent to the bird table.

A quick look revealed an insect something like the Giraffe Weevil. I fetched my camera and shot a series of images via my Printing Nikkor 105mm at f11, FOV 17mm wide..

This weevil stayed perfectly still, apart form raising or lowering its head, for at last half an hour, a macro dream! Well, not quite a dream subject, the black, shiny beetles always being difficult to show at their best.

1 is great and 2 quite good and it would benefit from a bit more space on top Harold.

Thanks, Morris.

There was no more space available. Maybe I should have rotated the camera to change the angle in the frame. Fixed focus lens = fixed frame size without changing the extension. I am seriously considering putting a helicoid M42 in the extension. It would then give 1:1 at the half-extended position. The lens is good for 2:1 to 1:2.

PP is not my natural environment.

I have removed a 55mm m4/3 tube, which annoyed me by rattling, and inserted a helicoid. The FOV is now 15-20mm at a touch, well within the optimum range of the lens. Putting the 55mm back in gives me FOV 8-12mm, still within the range of the lens and filling most of the jump to FOV 6mm with my reversed Schneider HM 40.
