I've seen a bunch of suggestions for tripods that are light and sturdy, but not so much ones that aren't meant to be brought around often. I'm looking for a heavyweight counterpart to my Gitzo GT0541+ Arca Swiss P0, and plan to have a Manfrotto 410 attached to this one for studio work. What are some options for a cheaper budget (let's say <$150). I know wood tripods will get mentioned here, but are there certain models that are better known than others?

Sniff around the Miller website: http://www.millertripods.com/product-type/tripods Not cheap, but perhaps you can find one used on Craigslist?

It's funny, but my favorite tripod is a Gitzo basalt. I've got a carbon fiber and a basalt. The basalt, it's heavier than carbon fiber and rock solid. I use it mostly anymore.

There seem to be some smaller basalts available at Amazon, but it seems Gitzo only has one on their website, a 3 series, or maybe I'm not searching properly...

I have an old Gitzo from the early 90s and it's a beast. Feels like it's made of lead rather than aluminum! My fav in the studio but I wouldn't carry it out of the room. The Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 055 aluminum at $225 isn't too far from $150 and feels almost as nice as three bricks tied together. A real boat anchor tripod--Manfrotto 058B--will be a lot more pricy.

I still have a couple around somewhere.
However, I was thinking of the larger Bogen tripods like the 3051 which was over 12 lbs.

I have a Giottos GB-4180 - a few generations back now. But it would be much the same as it's alloy counterparts from Induro and Benro. The alloy Manfrottos may be somewhat more expensive than you are looking at, the 055 series, I think. The Slik Pro 700x is a tad lighter, but runs $100.

Benro are phasing out their old logo and branding and you can pick up something like a new aluminum A4570F or A4570T (3 leg sections) or A4580F or A4580T (4 leg sections) for well within your budget. Unfortunately many stores are now listing them as discontinued. They weigh almost 10lbs but they're very solid.

I don't know the north american nomenclature, but I've been using Manfrotto 055xprob for about 7 years now. Overally it's a nice tripod for the price. From what I've read, you actually want a heavy tripod? This one's quite heavy and stable, but of course could be better. But, should be fine for studio, if cheap and heavy are the criteria...

Why heavy...just buy a sandbag or a rock carrier..and tie that to the tripod to make it heavy.
