p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zeiss Contax 85 2.8 MM aperture question for owners

Just picked up a mint copy of this lens and I notice that wide open at 2.8, the aperture blades don't open fully up when examining the lens from the front. The lens still seems to meter as if it's at 2.8 which leads me to wonder if this is by design (I don't recall my earlier AE version doing this but perhaps I just didn't notice). Can any MM 85 2.8 owners chime in if their lens behaves similarly wide open at 2.8? Thanks.

My late S85/2.8 MM (8435xxxx) in LN condition has identical aperture position when wide open, and does not pose a problem: you will notice that the optical path fully clears the aperture blades when viewed from either direction. The lens stop @ f/2.8 appears to be a solid aperture near the rear element.

Same with my Sonnar 85/2.8 MM (6994xxx), with the aperture blades visible when wide open. Out of interest, I checked all my other Zeiss Contax MM lenses (28/2.8, 35/2.8, 35/1.4, 45/2.8, 50/1.7, 85/1.4, 100/3.5) and the 85/2.8 is the only one that exhibits this behavior.

Great! I also noticed the optical path is clear when examined from the rear and that bokeh wide open is circular in off areas. Not that it matters but now I"m wondering if this was a design change from the earlier AE version to reduce internal flare. Comparing controlled studio test shots I did with the AE version when I owned it, it looks like sharpness is identical between the two but contrast might be a little higher with the MM wide open at 2.8. My copy is also 6994xxx btw.

There is no difference with the AE version in this regard.

Thanks. So the design is the same between the two.

Since we're talking C/Y Zeiss 85mm f/2.8... How many aperture blades for MM, AE? Ask because I think about switching from the Contax G 90mm f/2.8 eventually, but was disappointed to see that my 50mm f/1.4 AE has 6 aperture blades just like my 50mm f/1.7. I'd rather not step down from 8 on the G 90mm to 6.

My Sonnar 85/2.8 MMG had 6 diaphragm blades.

This is normal for 85/2.8 C/Y Sonnars.

Both AE and MM have 6 blades.
