I think a 200-500mm zoom would be much more useful to me that a 400mm or 500mm f/5.6 prime. When I shoot my 300f/4, I frequently find myself attempting to use the zoom feature that isn't there. (Yep - I'm a zoom guy.)

As for the lens staying at 500mm all the time, for me that would depend on what I was doing. I don't typically leave the 70-200 or 70-300 at their longest reach, and I doubt I would with this one either. I'm happy for the decisions Nikon made and will likely add this lens to my kit.

Looking at the popularity of the slow tele zooms, I'd say that is the future. We now have 80-400, 200-500/5.6, and 200-400/4 Nikkor lenses that cover 400mm and of course f/2.8 for those that need the speed and very best IQ.

I see the much lighter weight of the 200-500mm lens as being a big selling point when it is compared to the Tamron and Sigma 150-600mm lenses. I cannot see myself shooting with the Sigma Sport 150-600mm lens without the use of a monopod or tripod.

I couldn't see myself using the Sport unless I actually *needed* the ruggedness and weather sealing on a regular basis. The Tamron, and the Sigma Contemporary with it's more compliant stabilization and customization, are readily in my sights.

I have used both the C & S versions. The Sport version is amazing. Sharper @ 600mm and features the push pull zoom that is amazing to use especially for fast moving action where zooming is required. Of course it is heavier and that is a huge negative for some.

I like push/pull lenses. I find them easier and faster to use than my twist zooms. I'll be watching this new lens, along with the new Sigma Sport, with great interest.

I have to admit the price made me look at it twice, 1,179 here in the UK.

I have prime lenses in the zoom range, 200F2, 300F2.8 and over 600 F4 but for the price and ease of use it will be a great lens to have in the bag just in case for a back up or a good walk around lens etc.

I will wait to see real world results with it until I make my mind up but if there are good which I imagine its going to be, then its going in my bag.

I am very interested in finding how the newest AFS 200-500mm VR compares with the AFS 80-400mm VR in IQ and AF-speed and other basic features. I have been using the 80-400mm a lot and sometimes I do use the heavier (and bigger) 200-400mm f/4 (with a monopod). If the IQ of the 200-500mm is comparable (or as good as) the AFS 80-400mm, probably I will sell the 200-400mm that I only use occasionally. I have already placed an order for the new lens and I would love to test it doing bird photography during the fall migration.
