Because you get f/5.6 on the long end with the Nikon and it's slightly more compact and weighs 500g less. And while I'm glad you're happy with it, this isn't a thread about your lens.

Actually, the OP asked if we would dump our Sigmas... and Francois has the Sport version..
So yes, it is about all these relatively inexpensive telephoto solutions.
That said, I'm dying to find out how the new Nikon performs.

Sorry, I got lost in the myriad of threads and only looked at the title.

So I see that Amazon shows a release date of 9/17, do we know if this is 100% accurate?

...and I just happened to be in the neighborhood of Berger Brothers on Long Island, who just happened to have one copy of the Sigma Sport 150-600 Nikon version, which I just happened to try on my D810, which I just happened to like way too much. Decisions, decisions, decisions. 200-500 in 6 weeks or so, maybe a great lens or so so, or Sigma now.

I pick up the dock on Thursday.

Watching the video about being able to shoot pix with it in the shower sold me.

I think that's what the Nikon press release said as well.

For me it is a possible replacement for my 80-400mm lens for wildlife photography. I don't know though whether it will perform well enough in terms of autofocus and VR and will provide good enough image quality.

For general travel photography the 80-200mm part of the 80-400mm lens would be too valuable to forego with the 200-500mm.

Nikon has produced an alternative to the 80-400mm with greater image size (56% larger at 500mm) and still be hand held for extended shooting, unlike the three 150-600mm lenses on the market.

Thanks, I just re-read the release and they only mention mid-September without a specific date. Unless I missed something.

Not sure I follow you here, isn't the Sigma C lighter than the Nikon?

Both the Sigma C and Tamron are lighter (about 1950 gram) than the Nikon (2300 gram). The Sigma S is 2860 gram).
These 3 lenses have an even larger image size.
I have the Tamron and I have no problem handholding it for a longer time.

I already pre-ordered the day it was announced, now all we need is a pro DX body. Been using my Canon 7D with the new 100-400mm more than my D610/Tamron 150-600 combo lately

I would be interested in how well the 200-500 performs at the long end wide open. Would it be as good as a Nilkon 300 f2.8 with a 1.7 TC at f5.6?

You can find some good image samples on Nikons website and i think we are goong to see much more quite soon.
I find it a very interesting alternative to the options that we do already have.
The price and specs could make it a good all around nature and animal and sports lense for a lot of amateurs who still have not invested in the Sigma or Tamron options so far, and are willing to do so soon like me.

What?? I was out with the SigSport for 3 1/2 hrs yesterday, manheld.
Dude, they're all doable AND 600mm You need to hit the gym methinks.

I'm with the 'monkey on this one. Nikon's 200-400 is 7.3 pounds, the 500/4 is 7.8, and they're both definitely hand-holdable (by a chubby, out-of-shape business consultant no less) although you'll need to work on your technique and work out a little to do it well. Still, I've handheld the 200-400, and shot aviation at 1/100 and 550mm with TC for years. It's absolutely doable, and all of these lenses are lighter.

I'm definitely going to give the 200-500 a close look as soon as it's out in the wild.

Sounds like you're ready to move up to the ultimate hand-holding test - the Sigma 200-500 f2.8.

To do that, you'd need to look like Jesse Ventura in "Predator".

I think I can live with those for something to work with in post for a few tweaks of (applied) usm.

I didn't catch which body these were shot on ... any ideas?

Those crops look good - this lens is seriously tempting. I'm guessing the body was a D810, as the crops have pretty high magnification. I could be wrong, but I don't think a 24MP camera would zoom in that much at 100%.

Just for clarification:

The crops I posted have some usm applied to them from the "softer" files in the links. I meant that even with those files, I would be able to work with the files okay (learning curve for optimal sharpening to be determined with experience @ shooting a given lens / body combo) in post.

The detail in the pine cone and the birds eye are also very notable areas that respond well to USM. I'd suggest folks take a lap around the block with the files for themselves. Looks like one to watch.
