FX format means it'll cover the size of an FX sensor, but Nikon uses the "F" mount for both FX and DX, meaning you can easily put an FX lens on a DX body. You can ALSO put a DX lens on an FX body, but this usually results in heavy vignetting if you use the body in FX mode, but many (all?) current Nikon FX bodies also have an 'autocrop' option when you do this, to make the FX body crop to DX mode with a DX lens, effectively losing the vignetting.
Same with Sony's "E" mount, which is the same for both their FX and DX bodies.
This is slightly different for Canon, whereas you can put an "FX" lens on their DX bodies, but not the other way around. Canon's "EF" lenses are "FX" and will fit on both, but Canon's EF-S (DX) lenses will not mount on a full-frame Canon body.
