We are going to be in the Smokey Mountains for a few days this week and I brought enough gear for 4 of us ( including 2 granddaughters). Any suggestions other than parking in shade or insulation in the trunk? Has anyone ever had their lens or bodies harmed from being in a hot trunk. I'm a little concerned
with the level of heat we are experiencing right now. Note: Canon gear.

I've not had any noticeable problems in Utah and Arizona, which are as hot I think. Camera bags provide some insulation and prevent rapid temperature changes. I just don't worry about that.

Kathy,

Just put your camera body on the shadow side of your new 200/2 and your 300/2.8 ... the Big Whites will reflect the heat away from them.

If you're paranoid about roasting your gear, use a big honkin' cooler as a camera bag. Thus, you'll also have a six-pack and makeshift chair at ready.

Heat shouldn't be a problem if you just use common sense. BTW, it was in the 40s on Clingmans' Dome this morning. I spent this past week in the Gatlinburg area with family and it was perhaps as hot and humid as I can remember. Front came through Thurs. and humidity dropped. It's crazy crowded in the Smokies right now. Get an early start. I was out of the house most mornings by 5:30 to hike or ride and at a swim hole by lunch.

Welcome to Tennessee, Kathy!

Agree with others - start out early and take in the sights before it gets too hot.

I am actually from Clarksville Tennessee Tom. We
visit that area very frequently.

I've worked as a photojournalist in Texas for 35 years. Relax. I have never, not once, had a bit of gear damaged from heat--other than that time I shoved a 5D II in an industrial rotisserie oven to shoot a wide angle of chicken cooking! (The only damage was a corner of paint that cooked off.)

Possible heat fogging used to be a minor issue with film back in the bad old days, but thankfully that is no longer an issue for most of us.

I'll tell you what fogging is an issue - keeping a camera nice and cool, and then walking out into a very humid environment, popping off the lens cap, and trying to take pictures. The front glass will fog. The viewfinder will fog. The rear LCD screen will fog!

What part of Southern Illinois would that be Rusty?

Real close to I-64 & I-57. If the tree line was gone, I could probably take your picture as you're goin' by.

About 95 miles from me to Cairo. If you ever go east, then south to I-24, then you're comin' my way.

I've driven that route literally hundreds of times.
We started going the other way most of the time a few years ago. This way we don't have to worry about what time we go thru St Louis.
