p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · First experience shooting the moon!

The moon last night was just down right incredible so i quickly decided to whip out my tripod and gear and take some photos! I had never shot any form of astrophotography so it was an experience however i had fun! I wish my camera had more MP which would allow for finer crop but either way it was fun Let me know what think.
Taken on-
1D MKIII
Canon 100-400 F/4.5-5.6L IS
F16
1/4 second
ISO 100

A good start. Congratulations!

It's a little soft however.

1/4 second is way too slow.
There is no need for f/16 either at that distance and on a tripod. You can shoot the moon at f/4. I usually use f/8 or even f/11, 1/250th second, ISO 100...

A better moon to shoot also, is as it's almost setting, like this morning when the sky is turning color again...
Morning moon

I am glad you had fun shooting the moon! It's always fun shooting things like the moon for the first time. And while this looks nice, Craig is giving you some very helpful suggestions on how to make your 2nd moon shoot even better.

Nice second shot. Crisper details.
If you've caught the bug, google how to take a video and process a composite that weeds out captures with interfering atmospheric effects.
Then teach me!
