Hi folks,

Official questions are in bold at the bottom of the post if you want to skip ahead.

+++

I am trying to "downsize" part of my casual use kit. I have a couple of competing goals and I am having a hard time deciding what to buy/ use/ keep. I'd appreciate hearing about your own experience as I try to sort through the available options.

One criteria is that I absolutely need a camera with an EVF (or OVF) as I am very tired of trying to use LCD only cameras in the sun.

I am looking for either/ both a small pocketable compact like the Sony RX1003, and/or a 1" "super zoom" with a 400mm or longer equivalent like the Panasonic FZ1000.

+++

As background, I plan to keep a Nikon D750 with a 70-200 2.8 for events. I will also keep a second body for events- I have to decide between my Nikon D5300 and a Canon 7DII with a 24-70 2.8 II or equivalent. I will also one of those with a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for my main wildlife camera in Florida this winter.

I have been trying out a Nikon 1 V2 (and a J4 with the underwater housing) as my only cameras for the last 10 days on vacation. I am a bit underwhelmed with the results. I think part of the issue is quality of the 10-30 and 30-110 kit lenses. But I don't want to get into **yet another** lens system for the Nikon 1, like the $750 32 1.2 and $900 70-300 CX for casual use.

I also don't want to use the V2 with regular Nikon lenses via the FT-1 for casual use, like this vacation. That kit is just took big and heavy and limited.

Although I could potentially use the V2 as a supplemental wildlife camera with the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary this winter. So I might want to keep just that body? I wish it could use the same batteries as my D750 or D5300 (both different already...) Grr.

+++

I bought a Sony RX100III to use on this trip from Amazon, but it was defective so I returned it. (It couldn't charge the battery in camera.) Based on just a few quick snapshots from that camera, I like those images much better than the images from the V2 or J4.

Questions:

1.) Is the Sony RX100III much better than the Nikon 1 V2?

Is that because of the RX1003 sensor? Or is RX1003 lens much better than the 10-30 & 30-110 kit lenses on the Nikon 1? Both?

Or are the results closer than I think, without having had a chance to test the RX1003 more thoroughly?

Somewhat related to the first question:

2.) Would I be happy/ happier with the Panasonic FZ1000 and the 400 mm zoom lens and sensor over the V2 for casual wildlife work?

Would the V2 be as good/ better as the FZ1000 with the Nikon 1 70-300 CX lens? The images that I see posted here with the V2 and 70-300 seem pretty decent, but they are still a little flat and 2 dimensional, like a smaller sensor point and shoot.

I'm a former professional and a former studio photographer, so I do tend to be a little picky about image quality. I am completely happy with my APS-C images for most things. I hated a Canon S110 that I purchased a few years ago. But the 1" sensors are new territory for me. There are a lot of choices, but she far I'm not convinced by my Nikon 1 V2 with kit lenses.

Thanks much!
Michael

I am really interested in seeing the responses here, been thinking along the same lines. Have you considered the Sony RX10 as well? 24-200 equivalent lens, fixed f/2.8! From what I have read the FZ1000 at 400mm equiv isn't all that impressive so if you have some requirements it might not do compared to a proper wildlife setup.

I did look at the RX10 a bit.

It looks like a great camera and I am familiar with Sony E mount cameras, so the menus and options would be more familiar. The 400 mm equivalent on the FZ1000 sounded more appealing on the surface, but if it isn't that great the Sony would certainly be an option! Although it is also closer to the RX100III; I'd like to hear why people chose the RX10 over the RX1003 if they went that route.

I guess the Nikon 1 J5 is the first in the Nikon 1 series to use a Sony sensor. Thom Hogan has a decent review, but it doesn't have an EVF so I excluded it for my purposes:

The RX10 has me almost won over; it's fairly affordable, has a super useful zoom range, a good lens (reminiscent of the F707 I had once), and a nice EVF. Been looking for a "good enough" option to replace a 5D2 + lenses for vacations, family photo stuff, macro and so on. Figured I'd stick with Leica for my personal enjoyment shooting and this would just cover the remainder...

hmm....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Cyber-shot_DSC-RX100
the say
1.0" type (13.2 × 8.8 mm) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Cyber-shot_DSC-RX100
1 Zoll =2,54 cm
so the diagonal of 13.2 × 8.8 mm is 2.54cm ... ?
seems to long....
where is the mistake?

The measurement was for vacuum tubes, so a supposedly "one inch" sensor is 1.3-1.5x less than what you'd expect.

Is this a math question? If so, I calculated the diagonal to be approx 1.53 cm for a sensor size of 13.2 mm x 8.8 mm

hi tom, yes and no.
i always thought 1" is the diagonal of the sensor.
i did not expect that its just a historical name.
and from my point its just a trick to fake a bigger sensor.
same like Miele / Bosch / Siemens washing machines,
their "ECO 60°C" program to safes energy
But it washes only with ~40"C.
they say our ECO 60°C does not mean it use 60°C
It washes as good as washing with 60°C.
So 60°C ist not a temperature its just a name.
My Brother is dermatologist and people who have to use 60°C to kill fungus or
whatever have problems ......

But here we are talking about photography and not about ...

"...I think part of the issue is quality of the 10-30." if you're using the older model that came with the V2 (i.e., the one with filter thread), you probably got a bad sample. the 10-30 is a surprisingly good glass, IMO.

"...but I don't want to get into **yet another** lens system for the Nikon 1, like the $750 32 1.2 and $900 70-300 CX for casual use."

but those very lenses are what pretty much defines the Nikon CX line, though..and honestly, the Nikon CX cameras compliments the D750 more than the other cameras: same Nikon color signature, similar style of operation.

I have the Nikon V2 and I almost exclusively use it with the 32/1.2.

Thank you dalegaspi! I really appreciate the feedback, and your sharing your images. They look great! Certainly a good argument for the V2.

I just got home from vacation an hour ago. I think I'll try the Nikon 1 V2 with my Nikon 70-200 VR II, my Sigma 50 1.4 and similar on the FT-1. I'll put that on a tripod, stop down a bit, and take some test images.

That should tell me what the V2 can do with good glass. I also have my twin desktop monitors I can use to have a good look at the images.

You are 100% correct about the synergy with the D750! That is exactly what got me to buy the V2 kit to test out. It would especially be a great supplement for my wildlife photography this winter in Florida. I am flying down December 1 and hope to spend 4-6 months down there, within 15 minutes of some great wildlife areas, like Ding Darling on Sanibel Island and similar.

I had a Sigma 120-300 2.8 Sport that I used last winter. It was a beautiful lens, but I have some bad disks in my neck and a torn right shoulder. It was just too big and heavy for me and I had to sell it.

The ability to use the V2 with the 70-300 CX and/ or a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for wildlife work is pretty attractive! Certainly worth the effort to figure out what the camera can do. I think I will probably keep the V2 body at least in any case to try out this winter.

These are some pretty amazing tools! The small size of these cameras along with the high ISO quality of the Df and D750 are certainly opening up new avenues for exploration.

Cheers! Thanks again.

Michael
