I just love my D750 for just about everything but want a backup\second body one with wide lens other with the 150-600. Good image noise at high iso is one requirement as well as doubling as a wildlife shooter. Is the D3 going to be better or about the same as the D700. Af accuracy is very important to me also. I had a D2x do i know i would like the handling of either. Of course i would have to put a grip on the d700. What say ye?

Oh and the budget is around $1k so no second D750 and not interested in DX.

If you're adding the grip to the D700 then I would go with the D3. A full size body feels so much better and compact than an added grip. Control layout is also better. The D3 also has faster FPS, 2 SD cards and much better battery life as far as I remember. D3 prices has gone significantly down

I don't think there's a performance difference in terms of ISO and AF.

Edit: D3 takes 2 CF cards not SDs

While the D3 and D700 are still great cameras (I have a D700), there are disadvantages when used together with the D750:

- Different batteries and chargers
- Larger size/more weight
- Less resolution
- Different memory cards (the D700 takes one, the D3 two CF cards)

I don't know why you're not interested in a DX camera, but here's why I would go for a D7200 as a backup:

- Same battery and charger
- Same memory cards (SD, two of them)
- Similar size and weight
- High ISO capability on a similar level as the D3/D700
- Same resolution as the D750 but with more reach for your telephoto lenses

The challenge would be at the wide end if your D750 breaks down, but that can be solved with a Tokina 11-16 or Sigma 8-16mm, both excellent ultra-wide lenses for DX.

Another alternative would be a used D600 or D610.

You probably have to settle for the D700 if your budget is 1K.

Thanks, but I thought I was pretty clear in not wanting DX. I actually had a 7200 and just did not care for it, nice camera, but just not what I want. I did not feel like it was on par with D700/0d3 in the high ISO department at all. The D600/610 might be a better option.

Since you're not interested in DX, I would definitely look into the D610 for all the positives that Jorgen listed. Used/refurbished D610's go for right around 1K.

Hmmmm.....I have seen plenty of D3, D700, and D600 in or around 1k. Don't think that is a limiting factor. And if I up it just a few hundred more even more possibilities come up.

That makes sense to me. I kept my D700 to use as a backup for the D810 and whenever I don't need 36MP. In reality, I rarely use it, and although there's a smaller gap to the D750, the gap is there, and it's noticeable.

Actually the D600/610 is probably the best choice however I hate not having ok button zoom, that drove me nuts on the D600 I owned before. At the end of the day though it would be the closest to the D750 as I'll get.

Another vote for the D600/610. You can "get around" the lack of 1-touch 100% crop
review by advancing the + then scrolling thru your shots with the thumbwheel. It keeps
the zoomed perspective and makes that flaw tolerable. The IQ is great at ISO6400, a lot
better than my D3...with twice the size files. I keep my D3 for sports and its 9 fps.

You can use the back wheel to scroll through images on the D600? I have been looking for that setting, where is it?

I sold my over mileaged D700 (close to 190k clicks) to a local photog for $550. If price is a factor and the D700 was the only body for that price in that body, D700 all day. If your budget is $1000 for a body, I'd opt for the D3. Or like others have stated, the D600/D610 is still pretty neat!

I have the d750. I have the d700. I had the d800. I shoot weddings and events so the auto focus of the d610 is not good enough for the way I like to shoot. I shoot one body and have no problem having to shoot the d700 if the d750 goes down. In a wedding situation, at your price point. I would go d700. If you can live with the auto focus of the d600 / d610 then that would be better than the d700. good luck
