Hi fellow FM'ers! Does anyone have an idea what kind of software or plugins are used to go from a digital pic to something like this?? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

That's some pretty cool stuff. I would contact the artist and ask her advice.... I am guessing that 80% is pre-shot work.... make up and lighting adjustments.

You may also look into a program called On One Perfect Portraits 9.5.

I have been using their Layers and Effects to do some neat stuff with landscapes.... for example (not to hijack your thread with photo's) Here is a before and after using their software, you may be able to get some nice effects with portraits, but I haven't tried it..... worth looking into.

It's all done before the shot is taken - lighting (a beauty dish and triflector or is it three barebulb strobes to create the catchlights and overall even lighting on the face, perfect makeup and hair, professional model with beautiful face and clever composition. From then on it's just a matter of retouching technique, but I bet the raw image is almost as good. I'd ask the artist - that's a good way to go. Art is subjective but plugins don't do art. People do.

Also look at Topaz Impression. You can get some pretty nifty effects from it. I think there is some HDR effects in Sarah's photos.

I would say both the original and edit pictures are art

I like both versions. Nicely done.

Cheers,
Andre

Sarah's work is not one action you can use. Phlearn is probably the best website I can recommend to find a combination of effects (tutorials) to produce this type of image. This is high quality stuff that is done in layers, each detailed layer helping to make up the composite image you see. She is very good at what she does.

Aaron Nace is an outstanding Photoshopper and teacher. His tutorials you can purchase are well worth the money. A program like Topaz won't cut the mustard if you are looking to duplicate her quality.

Some of that, particularly the surreal look is done with dodging and burning in PhotoShop.

Dodge and burning portraits is about 1/3 of the page down. http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/03/30-tips-and-tricks-for-photo-retouching-that-you-dont-know-yet/#technique8

I would think that no plug-in's were used. Rather, It's the combination of great makeup and styling, getting it right in camera, and then finished by a pro high-end retoucher using photoshop.
