No, in 2050 as a retro camera. They'll call it the D400F and it'll look just alike a D300

Hmm... what to call it? Df400, 400Df or D400F ... we should start a poll.

This is true but it will be the D400z which will replace the rumored D400S,T,U,V,X,and Y.

Nah, Nikon already missed the boat with all those low numbers. Any new semi-pro DX body will have to be numbered D40,000 to truly distinguish it rather than acknowledge it won't even compete with the 7DII.

Even when the D400 comes out with ISO 10 billion it will not hold a candle to the D300s, much less the D300. Geesh guys!!

Ok I was being a bit sarcastic their......

Hopefully it will be a great camera and if they nail the price point.

Let's assume this hypothetical is true and we'll see a D400 (or equivalent) announced next month for $1800-$2000. What exactly would it have to do that would justify the $600-$800 price difference from the D7200?

24Mpx in a D810 body (with the features), 14bits (no limitations), 8-10fps (with or without MB-D12 grip) and deep/normal buffer would be enough for me.

similar built as D810, deep buffer (40 NEF @ 14bit uncompressed), 10fps, D4s AF module, improved 24mp sensor?

Honestly it doesn't need much more to meet the "D300 successor" criteria and get people excited:

- D810-like build / Control Layout / Ergonomics / General feature set
- Current "pro" AF module (The one from the D750 or D810/D4S would be fine)
- 8 FPS capability (that seems to be the magic number for most people). More is better, but it needs at least 8 I think. Maybe 9 or 10 with grip.
- Reasonably deep buffer (maybe 30-40 14 bit RAW)
- D7200 sensor, or whatever Sony's latest 24MP DX sensor is

There is easily $600-800 of value there on top of a D7200 for those that want it.

That's about it. Looking at the competition, Canon primarily added (limited) 10 FPS capability and an updated AF module to the 7D. That seemed to do the trick, minus all the AF issues people keep complaining about. The 7D2 is also already down to $1499, so maybe it isn't selling as well as they had hoped - perhaps that is why Nikon is hesitant. The group that wants pro DX is a very vocal one, but it's hard to say how big it is. I do think Nikon could easily sell the above speculated D400 at $2,000 though. I also think it would be so easy for them to make one (they pretty much have all the parts) that they might as well haha.

I'm still optimistic about a D400, and hopefully the September rumor is true, but like I was saying before we're well into the "believe it when I see it" phase since it's been so long.

There is no reason to shoot uncompressed NEF, it is literally the same as lossless compressed. The only possible thing I can think of is people using the uncompressed format to skirt around NX2's lack of support for newer cameras. There is no photographic benefit from shooting uncompressed.

for the extra cash, it should have some chrome on it, and real leather instead of the rubbery stuff. Maybe even a few token bits of titanium, gold plated USB terminals, four memory card slots in a raid mirror configuration, and most importantly, a tasteful little badge spelling out "Andre Labonte Anniversary Edition"

The rest will be probably be made up of D7200 bits

Perhaps we could engage in a little, uh, pool on when the D400 will be announced?
