Does anyone have experience with this lens, especially on an A7?

Thanks!

I do.

It's an amazing lens considering its age. It isn't going to compete with modern ultrawides, particularly in terms of contrast and wide open performance. Nevertheless, stopped down, it's a great lens. At f/8, I have few complaints--extreme corners can be an issue depending on the scene and its mustache distortion can be an issue for straight lines.

Really nice and useful wide angle. This lens is truly a L class.

I've some images here - http://www.travel-hopefully.com/randomthoughts/does-your-gear-matter

I'm unfortunately selling mine to fund some other stuff.

I have one of these and use it a lot on my Sony A7. I think it's better at the 20mm end than the 35mm end, but it's completely usable at 35mm too. I tend to use it at f11, but it's fine at f16 too; I haven't noticed diffraction effects. I can't comment on colour issues because my RAW files turn black and white as soon as I import them into Lightroom! In terms of corner softness, there's a bit wide open. By f8 I would judge it's fine all across the image except for absolutely the most critical corner applications.

It does suffer from mustache distortion, and it's worse at 20mm where I mostly use this lens. However, I made a profile for cleaning that up so it's a non-issue now.

Click here for an image of the roof of an old barn that is perfect for showing how the distortion cleans up. Prior to applying the profile the top beam had a lovely mustache shape.

Mike,

These are really nice shots, and excellent on screen. Would you mind sharing what kind of sharpening you're using for web presentation?

Thank you all!

Rob - If I find one on auction or someone here in CONUS wants to trade I may bug you for the profile. Great photo, great tonality.

In Lightroom, it looks like most of them are:

Sharpening: 65
Radius: 1
Detail: 25
Masking 12

If I remember correctly, export sharpening was turned off.

Sure, send me a note. It's a bit of a learning curve, but making profiles yourself is worth learning if you are going to get other old lenses.

By the way. I just picked up the. FD 17mm lens. It's not as good as the 20-35, but I like it a lot for the extra angle of view.
