Very nice. I have never seen one so light in color. Where was this taken?
Thank you, this was taken in NE TX. I have seen them anywhere from beige and perfectly camouflaged sitting on top of sand, to black and camouflaged on a tree stump. Some have markings, some don't, this one had a few.

Nice image, you are closer than I'd like to be Mike

Thanks Morris, it was on a stick about 2-3 ft. off the ground, which would have slowed it down a bit, I think. And it didn't seem agitated. I was maybe 7 ft away? Not too close

Snakes don't get much respect, Mike, but this is nice. I think some PP to pull out the scale contrast would help.
Thank you, yeah its irritating, they really don't get much respect. I accidentally shot this in jpeg, but I use Gimp anyway, how would you recommend increasing contrast? USM or levels, or perhaps something else? Have been trying to improve pp skills lately.

This looks like a cottonmouth moccasin. They are nasty tempered! They usually put out a bad odor when really aroused.
Too close for me! I have had several accidental close encounters with them in southeast Texas while fishing and unless I had a 2000mm lens wouldn't be photographing!

Yes, I used to run into them fishing here in NE TX! What you thought was ground would slither off 4 ft in front of you! And youd try to get calmed down....
Occasionally I'll run into an irritated one, but usually they sit there, since I'm a LOT bigger. I scared the daylights out of one a few weeks ago.
They're often along a stream with 5 ft banks, so not necessarily too dangerous.

Neat image Mike!!!
I quite like snakes and reptiles, though many people do not. I once did a show in my gallery (years back) of terrific images by an artist who did a beautiful series on snakes with leaves and flowers. Bold graphics ,colourful, and extremely well done. The reaction of some people entering the space for the first time was astounding.... First glances with smiles as they saw the beautiful images turned to shock when they saw the snake(s) in each one. Some people turned white and bolted out the door. ) YMMV
Thanks for this moccasin photo ... I have never seen one in person

Thanks Lucky! They scare me at times but I like them, too. Just part of the woods and swamps, it's where they live.
I had a similar response one time, I did a craft show and had images of mocassins up. One woman saw them, kind of freaked out, and whisked her mother in law around my booth! Apparently snake images would have been too terrifying!

lovely shot, mike. loved the coil of the body.
Thanks KD, that's one of the nice things about snakes, sometimes they have really nice curves, which can be hard to find in other subjects
