My current brother MFC-J470 just bit the dust, and I am looking to buy a printer to print 5x7 and up to 8x10 for home use. This won't for for any type of professional use, just to print Christmas cards and photo album/scrapbooking use. I print about 100 color 8x10 a year and 200 color 5x7. Does anybody have a decent printer in the $200 price range that uses relatively affordable ink/toner? It doesn't have to have any integrated fax or scanner.

The Epson Artisan printers have always received good reviews.

Epson Artisan 1430 Inkjet

A refurb is available from Epson for $199.

As for cheap ink, does not exist to my knowledge.

Thanks for the heads up. The printer seems like a good deal. Does anybody know a way to calculate cost per print? The manufacturers don't make it easy (probably for a reason)..

redriverpaper.com has some 'how much does it cost' analysis on their website.

Bottom line is that most inkjets use a total of about 1mL per sq. ft. So, many of the lowend printers have about 10-14mL cartridges. Do the math. In the small size, it's probably about $1 per 8.5x11 for the ink. The bigger printers bring that cost down to $0.50 or $0.40

I bought an Epson XP-610 for $70 for printing one offs in 4x6, 5x7 and 8x12. It uses four individual cartridges. Prints on CD/DVD discs, has a built in scanner - and has WiFi connectivity in addition to USB.

Canon PIXMA Pro-100 (can print up to 13x19 inches) goes on sale quite often for $50 after rebate (300-250=50). It comes with 50 sheets of 13x19 inch photo paper too. I just got my 2nd one last week, to replace the one that I have been using for more than 2 years. it's an excellent printer.
It's true you have to pay up front but Canon rebate has been very reliable and I always got my money back within 3 weeks.
Refilled inks from Precision Colors work very well. I can't say for sure about longevity of prints but color reproduction is excellent.

Canon Pixma Pro-100 now retailing for $49.99 at B&H after coupon and mail-in rebate. Details by Alan in the thread below:

I have placed my order with B&H, and am expecting the printer today. However, please note that it used dye-based inks.

+3 for the Canon Pro-100. I paid $100 for it about a year ago and I love mine. Why limit yourself to an 8x10 printer when you can go A3+?

I have received mine. $49.99, free shipping, arrived in two days from NY to GA. Still have some ink in my Epson that I need to use before I set up the new Canon printer.

I would only buy Canon or Brothers. I prefer laser over ink jet = cost savings.

The Canon Pro-100 is a photo printer. I have a Dell laser/multi printer for my other needs.

Credit goes to curious80 for the heads up on the Canon printer.

Yes go with a b+w laser for general printing and a inkjet for photos. I have seen a lot of good deals on the canon pro 100. I am considering one also. The ink usage is a concern however.
