I was disappointed with the performance of the canon 16-35 II for wedding photography. anyone else use this lens for weddings. pictures look very soft. May send the lens to canon for inspection.

I thought it was garbage, too. Ended up going with the new f4 is version. Much sharper and way better colours. And f4 gives me some focusing forgiveness during the dances.

Thanks, I was thinking about signing up for CPS just to be able to send some of my gear in for service.

I have both lenses. The 24-70 is indeed a bit sharper but I still love my 16-35

I have both, too and find the 24-70 f2,8 II a lot sharper on the sides/ corners. The 16-35 f 2,8 II is very good at around 20mm, especially stopped down to f8-11. At 16mm my copy is definitelly visibly less sharp on the sides. Basically I donīt trust my 16-35 too much and when I donīt need the wide angle I stick with the 24-70- that is a lens I know I can count on 100%.

If you need a full frame zoom wider than 24mm, you don't have too many other options in the Canon brand. No, it's no where near as good optically as the 24-70/2.8 II, but if you MUST have the ultra wide angle, the point is moot.

If you don't need the ultra wide angle, then you should be using a different lens.

I have the 16-34 f/4 and that's very good, but I rarely use it. 24 is the widest I use.

I just bought the 16-35 f4 to replace the f2,8 and now have them both before I manage to sell the f2,8. The sides are definitelly much sharper with the newer lens- at all apertures. That said f2,8 is rather more exciting for weddings. Then again, if itīs not properly sharp what is it good for? Now with the new versions of the zooms- 16-35, 27-70, 70-200 Iīm confident I can do anything with excellent quality.

Our 16-35 II was super soft at 2.8 and we found ourselves shooting it at f4 and higher... which is why we upgraded to the f4 with IS. While the metal build felt solid, it was constantly coming lose and requiring service too.

My 16-35 went really soft after a bad knock. Apparently a sharp smack to the lens barrel can damage the element mounts and allow them to shift out of place. It's sharp as a tack after coming back. The corners are always a hair soft for my liking as 16mm, but it sort of gives it that wide-angle dreamy look if you use it correctly.
