Hi folks. The accident was due to rushing, and I learnt my lesson. The 7D and 70-200 was on my tripod and the cable release got wrapped around my leg. It hit the grassed ground and I got off easy save one bit of damage. The lens torqued tearing the corner out of the locking pin hole. All still functions properly but the lens no longer locks on the body.
Damage lens mount:

The defective mount comes off the lens by removing 9 screws in under 5 minutes. The problem is getting my hands on the right part. Canon Canada claims the don't have the part to sell me but will charge $250 (a flat fee) plus shipping there to repair it. I have seen similar parts around the web for $15 - $50. There is some discrepancy on what the actual part number is. This is the document that Canon sent showing stock numbers:
Lens Parts Diagram:
It shows the part as:
CY1-2428-000 (where the last 3 digits specify a thickness)
I measured my ring to be 2.438mm with a micrometer. Shown here:
Micrometer:

This may make the part I am looking for CY1-2428-240.
It may be 2.40 mm plus 0.02 mm spacer (part no CY1-2178-002

Does anyone have any incite in to this part or where I could turn to for parts?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Welcome to FM.

If you're anywhere near to the best coast, I suggest that you drop into the Camera Repair Center, on Hunter St. in Halifax. They'll fix you up for a reasonable price (which might be less than $250, or not).

I think it's more fair to say "broken mount", than "defective mount".

I am in Victoria on the best coast. I sent the parts diagram to a local camera repair shop and said that if they can get the part, I will bring it to them. I have not heard back yet.

Well, at least you're partly right; you sent in the parts diagram.

Good chance your lens mount on the camera itself has been tweaked as well. I'd send the body in and have them check the mount to the sensor for being parallel.

I haven't checked it out thoroughly yet but shot some baseball photos on Saturday and they appeared to be crisp. My hope is that:
1. Someone can help me find the part. and
2. I will take test shots of a test page and confirm that all is well.

Hey, a guy can have hope eh!

I'd call Canon USA, they seem to be more accommodating than Canon Canada. If you have a friend in the USA, he can forward it to you. Don't tell them you are in Canada, first see if they have a part.

DH Camera sells camera parts. I'd check with them, I've bought parts there before that were fine.
