Anyone have any experience with either of theses TC's on the 70-200? I am trying to avoid buying the 80-400G. Will either of these or both give me acceptable quality in my pictures? Love to see some of your pictures and hear your opinions.

Personal opinion ... It sucks on the 70-200 f2.8. I have tried it recently and removed it in disgust - it just about works well when stopped down to f8 but still a great loss of quality - and a huge loss of light. Its just about acceptable if stopped down a stop or two the the 200f2. I would avoid the 2.0 tciii it also purple fringes really badly when shot wide open even on the 200f2.

If you are a pixel peeper such as I, i'm pretty sure you will see the degredation on the 1.7 as well as on the 1.4. Chances are you will find the 1.4 just about acceptable. Personally and if money allows, spend the extra on a dedicated lens.

Its all well and good seeing downsized web pics that pretty much hide the smearing and loss of quality, but at 100% i find most teleconverters to be dissapointing.

YMMV.

Ps .. if you want to buy a 2.0 tc iii mines for sale lol!! I dont think i have a bad copy i just think my requirements for quality are higher than some. I felt the same about using canons 1.4 mk iii on a 400 f5.6 - whilst it was good, it was TOO much of a loss over the standard lens. Too many people said there was little to no loss - it was too much for me.

Never used the 1.7x on it but the TC20EIII did not work well on my 70-200VRII. I ended up with the 80-400G and have never looked back.

When I had the 70-200 f/2.8 VRII the only TC that worked well was the TC-14e. TheTC-20eiii however works very well with the 70-200mm f/4 and with the 300mm f/4 PF.

Interesting results from others regarding these TC's. I have found that the 2x TCIII was better than the 1.7x TCII, in fact the 2x TCIII works very well, especially at close range, up to say 15-20mts and drops off a little after that, but still more than acceptable. I rarely use the 70-200 f2.8 VRII + 2x TCIII combo now as I have the 80-400 f4.5-5.6G VRII, the 300 f2.8 VRII (and use a 1.4x TCII if I need 400mm) and the 400mm f2.8E FL VR. If I were traveling, I would take either the 70-200 f2.8 VRII + the TC's or the 80-400 f4.5-5.6 and sometimes opt for the 70-200 f2.8 (plus TC's) due to it's f2.8 aperture and stunning IQ.

All 3 TC's *can* work quite well on the 70-200/2.8, just don't expect any AF miracles with the 1.7 or 2.0. It will also change any AF fine tune you may have done. Lance has graciously shown is what you can expect from that combo if used correctly. There will be some sharpness loss from the naked lens obviously, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be, and some quick processing can get a lot of it back.

Thanks to all for your help. I'm using the 70-200 f2.8 with and without the 1.4 this week. Bad news is it will inside a dark arena. I'll be using the lens with a D800.

The 1.4x TCII or TCIII works very well with minimal degredation to IQ.

1.4x Works perfect
1.7x Gets the job done
2x Makes a great paper weight

At least in my experiences.

On a D800 in a dark arena it may struggle but so will the 80-400. I signed out an 80-400 from NPS for an NHL game planning to buy one later thinking I could use it for corner photo holes and up high instead of the 70-200 and 200-400 and it just didn't stand up at the long end wide open. I was using D3s cameras. I have used the 70-200 VR1 with 1.4 and 1.7 for years on various bodies and the 1.7 has paid for itself many times. You lose a bit of IQ but the images are very useable.

Back when I had the VR, the only TC I was satisfied with was the TC-14E II.
Since going to the VR II, I find it plays better with all the TC's. Not 80-400G
'better' but good enough to print great 16 X 20's of modest crops.

...here's the D7K with the old VR & TC-14E II

Using a D800, shot 1.7TC on 70-200 VRII and it was just a little better than OLD 80-400VR when using the latter at comparable FLs (over 300mm). Hope that helps

I am grateful for the discussion from all, and for Lance B's images. I used a like-new, pre-owned TC-20E III, at a nearby camera store, to test a 300/4 PF that I was considering buying for my wife. She opted for a 80-400G, instead, but I returned, later, and bought that pre-owned TC-20E III, as it was not only far less $ than a new one, and therefore a good value, but certainly performed well on my D3s, at least with that one 300mm lens.

It may seem backwards, to buy a TC, first, and then look for a lens to complete the pair, but, well, that is what I have done, after finding reviews that indicated it pairs reasonably well with several lenses on my wish list. The current rebate in the USA for the 70-200/2.8 VR II is timed nicely, but I am starting to find interesting narratives, if not many posted images, thus far, regarding the 70-200/4G with the TC-20E III.

Therein lies the rub...f4. You'd be starting out at f8 w/TC-20E III
Typically one stops down a tad to recover some lost contrast (throwing
all those add'l elements on the zoom) so figure at least f9/f10 for better IQ.
AF and options will take a hit as will shooting much beyond 40 yds. I'm not
too fond of it on my f2.8 which is a stop faster. Some guys are happy with
static captures in close. I have much faster glass for those kinds of shots...
without resorting to TC's. The TC-17E II's probably the best compromise for
reach/IQ if one must employ them (I have a VERY good copy) GL

PS. Don't be lulled into expecting the same IQ Lance delivers with that
combo. He can make most anything look good.

Thanks.

I agree that a TC-17E II would have been a much better to intentionally pair with a 70-200mm lens. A "best" partner lens for the TC-20E III is, probably, a Nikkor 200/2, or 300/2.8, but either, new or used, except perhaps for a pre-VR 300/2.8 AF-S, will have to wait until 2018 or so.

Had I not already been considering a 70-200mm option, anyway, I would probably just store this TC-20E III, in a dry place, awaiting a proper f/2 or f/2.8 prime partner. Something has recently prompted me to accelerate consideration of a 70-200/2.8 VR II lens, however; the $200 rebate during June, and learning that a grandbaby is due at the end of this year. (The TC would not be for photographing the grandbaby.)

Here's a broad, sweeping generalization...The TC20EIII seems to be at it's best with the 300 f2.8. Others report it is great with both the 200 f2 and the 400 2.8 (I don't have either of these to test it with). YMMV

This is a sample I posted previously, 70-200/2.8 VRII w/TC-20EIII at 400mm, f5.6. Probably 35 feet away from the subject. Keep in mind that I handheld at 1/200s on the 800e, which results in crap images.

I remembered that image, and the story, as soon as it loaded.

I did not, of course, remember the lens used, or that it had been coupled with a TC-20E III.

Our pack of pooches is yet another of the reasons I have been contemplating adding a 70-200/2.8 lens, for the fast AF. (Not that I expect AF to be as fast, or track nearly as well, when using a TC, of course.)
