Get it Digital is now selling the D810 at 2099.99 on ebay. I'm very tempted but it probably it
will hit 1500.00 as soon as the next model is released so I think I can get along with the D800 for another few months. I can't believe how fast these things depreciate! I think that the new Sony will force Nikon to speed up the new camera. Thanks Sony!

Not sure I consider this depreciation. Its still $3000 at B&H. I'm not in the habit of buying unusually good deals from Brooklyn camera shops, but they do have a solid eBay history. If you are willing to put up with some pesky up-sales calls, you may end up with a really good deal on a D810 (and its battery, strap and manual ; ).

If I were you, I'd run my d800 into the ground!

A year old camera body sold as grey market with no warranty for a discount is not really "depreciation". Going rate for a new D810 with standard warranty is still pretty much exactly what it was when it was released, which is $2996 USD / $3499 CAD. There are always periodic deals to be had, but it hasn't depreciated at all really yet. The D800/E only dropped around $200 in 2 years time before the D810 announcement, I expect the D810 to be similar.

Even when it hits $1,500 the same cast of characters won't buy it.

Instead they will post again and say "If it would only hit $1,200, then I'd buy it."

And the world will keep on spinning...

I might buy one on the used market when it hits $1,500, but I'm still not sure I'd see much improvement over my D800E. I don't shoot video and the quieter shutter just isn't a factor for me. I am positive I won't buy one at $2,000. Rather buy a used 45mm PC-E than that.

$900 off of retail is pretty insane.

The Nikon D810 is a Nikon MVP item meaning its selling price is dictated to all authorized dealers by Nikon USA. If a new one is being sold on Ebay for $2099 proceed with extreme caution. I would be willing to bet that it is either;
used
grey market
not containing battery and/or charger and/or Nikon USA warranty
stolen
certainly not being offered (if new) by an authorized Nikon retailer.

As I said, proceed with extreme caution.

By the way, the current authorized MVP price is $3296.95 less $300 instant rebate resulting in $2996.95.

It's definitely a grey-market camera - the seller admits as much. Still a great deal for those who have other means to get the body serviced, such as if they travel outside the USA.

I just looked up the item on ebay and saw the following;

>>>Warranty: YES. Direct Import Item 1yr US Warranty via Seller<<<

Direct import item seems to indicate that this is a grey market item. Still....proceed with extreme caution. Nikon USA will not do repairs on grey market items even if you are willing to pay them to do so.

Yep, not only will Nikon USA not service the body but I don't see how the warranty provider the seller is using will be able to service it either since Nikon USA wont sell parts to anyone. They may be getting parts from overseas - maybe the same market the camera was imported from.

It's gray for sure. Same camera, same boxed items as if it was being bought from a big box store here in the states. Just no warranty. It's all in their description and they sell high volume big ticket items all the time. With their positive feedback I wouldn't worry about not getting chargers or batteries, etc. Just be sure you know you are getting an import.

As far as a means to getting it fixed. I'm sure if these guys can get these import cameras, they can get imported parts.

I bought this D810 camera from this ebay dealer 6 months ago, at $2400 which includes a 3 year replacement warranty. Perfect camera, with all items as supplied by Nikon. Same contents as USA camera. Happy as a clam I bought it, should it fail after 3 years I'll get it repaired or buy a newer version. This dealer sells complete units, nothing removed or stripped out, no bait and switch.

If you buy a D810, you will instantly see a wonderful improvements over your D800E. I did, and dumped the D800E for another D810. All the image improvements have been discussed many times, so I'll not go into it.

Guessing this is due to the fact that the Yen is cheap to the dollar (over 121 yen to the dollar)

When it gets under $1500 used for a nice example, I'll be seriously tempted. Vigorously enjoying my D700 for now...

I've had a grey market lens (the old Nikkor 500mm F5 AIP manual focus telephoto) repaired by Nikon - at their Melville repair shop at Nikon Headquarters on Long Island, NY.

This was about 2003 or so - they accepted the lens with no questions asked...and then warrantied the repair for 3 months (or 6 months - apologies I cannot remember length of repair warranty).

Nippon Photo Clinic in NYC does great Nikon repairs...pricey but they do it right and get it done fast.

Agreed.
I got my 24-120 VR from them and no worries.

I just dont see this. I have a d800e and rented a D810 to shoot alongside a wedding and besides the much more quiet shutter, the improved auto ISO mode and the new highlight tone priority mode along with the improved view finder... I just didnt feel any of that individually or combined would improve my photography or my images or make my life any easier.

I have the money for a new camera and actually need one to replace my aged D700 but a D810 is just not that much of an improvement over a D800/D800e and is no savior to someones photography unless you are lacking in a specific area where those new features will somehow save you??

With all the sales going on with grey market Nikon items, there is definetely demand for camera repair shops that can import parts as well.

^^^
That would be a very busy shop.
I'm sure Nikon USA would scream bloody murder to the home office... The ability to repair the latest grey market camera/lens in the US would really take a bite out of their bottom line.

Bought a few gray market bodies and lenses on eBay in the past, including my current D750. Never had any issues. Of course, buy with caution and due diligence, researching the seller and their feedback on the same item. Buying on eBay/Paypal is almost foolproof nowaday though - if any problems present itself in 30 days just return it. It's unlikely problems will pop up after that (but of course, not guaranteed). If the seller does make good with the 1 year warranty then you're good, otherwise you'd just have to pay for a 3rd party repair. But in my experience, this is highly unlikely, and the substantial savings outweigh the risk. Saving $1000 cuts your losses if you sell it in the future, offsetting any possible low risk of 3rd party repair after some time.
