p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Need a camera for my daughter

I am asking for your advice.

My daughter is leaving in three weeks for Santiago, Chile where she will be teaching English for a year.

She needs a new camera.

She's your typical point and shooter and it needs to be small enough to travel yet good enough for completely automated pics.

I want to get her one of the Sony RX100s but that is probably not the best.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Bob

I'd like to keep it around 500 or so. Maybe a tad more. Also, used is good.

You'd not go wrong with one of the Sony RX100s

Hi Bob...

My wife recently bought a Nikon S9900 and is thrilled. She hates anything that involves technology from computers to cameras. However, when the camera arrived, she spent a few minutes with the quick-start guide, charged the battery, inserted the memory card, and she was taking beautiful photos. It's simple to use and has a fantastic zoom range.

Give it a look to see if it meets your daughter's needs:

P.S., I'm a Canon guy, but sometimes I find myself trespassing in the Nikon forum

Good luck.

Tom

There are a LOT of great options, but most are more expensive than a previous gen RX100 (I or II), and none that would provide the same combination of ease of use, compactness, and image quality, especially with a ~US$500 budget.

I got my daughter a black & sliver Nikon J5 with the 10-30mm kit lens; and for not overly dark ambience, the picture quality is great (autofocus is fast & very good), better than my RX100 Mk 3 and sometimes nearly as good as D810. It looks beautiful, is super-easy camera to use, does videos, and has a selfie-friendly LCD (and so does the Sony RX100 M3) if your daughter is into selfies. It's small enough for a jacket pocket (not as pocketable as RX100), and very portable in a small, cozy camera pouch. Subjective, personal opinion, of course.

Sony RX100 III, used it's ~$550 USD. For P&S, it probably is the best unless you want fixed focal length with a larger sensor like the Coolpix A, Ricoh GR, or Fuji X100. Those will also be (some well) within your budget.

For even larger, but interchangeable lens -
Canon M series
Nikon J series
Nex series + powerzoom or pancake or Sigma lenses
Canon SL1 + 24mm STM

Let her just use her Iphone... she will likely have it with her all the time. It's pretty capable as a P & S.
