I'll admit, I'm a Nikon guy, but I picked up the 7d Mkii because I got tired of waiting for Nikon to produce a DX camera with these stats. After reading a lot of reviews about how the 7d had a lot of noise at high ISO I went and snapped a few shots to see for myself.... and I have to admit, it's pretty damn good really.
Here are a few photos to show what I mean - both have some noise reduction in lightroom - and yes the Nikon looks a little cleaner and a little sharper, but on the sharpness front - sparrows are a lot quicker and smaller than eagles. Also, 7d mkii is roughly $4500 less retail. I think It performs just fine, I think I'll keep it.

Here is another at ISO 6400 - noise is not bad at all in my opinion.

The difference between the D4 photo and 7D2 photos is striking.

I would like to see crops of each at the same pixel density.

Sure, resized to web size the 7's noise is just fine. But, I just bought a 7d2 and it is really not as good as the 5d3 at 1600 or higher. It is still a good camera, and worth the price

I agree 100%. At 1600 and above ( I actually try to keep my 7D2 at 1250 or lower, ideally 800 or lower) the 5D3 and the 1DX even more so are much, much better. Above 1600 the 1DX starts to gain around 2 stops on the 7D2 where as at the lower ISOs the 7D2 can easily match the 1DX for noise. Still the 7D2 gets me shots I can't get with the 1DX and has been getting much more use than my 1DX over the past 4 months.

Even at these web sized images that 7D2 8000 image lacks all detail and just looks rather poor. The D4 image is great and what I'd expect from 1DX. The 6400 image looks better but it likely is much less of a crop also.

In good light the 7D2 can be pushed much higher. This image was showing 6400 but you can tell I had lots of light from the rest of the EXIF.

I think you guys missed my point, I read reviews making the 7d mkii sound really bad at anything above 3200, and the fact is that even at 6400 you can get a useable image.
The D4 is a 16 meg full frame, the comparison was to show that although the 7d mkii cant match it, it does do pretty well - and it is a 20 meg cropped sensor with a much tighter pixel density. I was pleasantly surprised, as I wasn't expecting much after flipping through reviews.
On a noise level all of these look better than the old ilford b&w film, which was the fastest film you could get just 20 years ago. Anyway, seems like a great camera for the price with the feature set you get.

@ arbitrage, from a technical point of view - I don't see anything at all in your shot to complain about at ISO 6400. It's not something you need to use all the time, but it is nice to know it is possible to get good results when you need to bump it up.

I agree the Sparrow was a poor example, Here is 100% magnification on the Eagle, no noise reduction.

100% magnification on my dog, no noise reduction

actually, given that the 7d2 has "dual pixel" binning one could argue that it is a 40MP sensor. In either case it is a good camera but I really don't think I would ever use it above 3200.

I use mine plenty of time at 6400 and above for sports and it does very well. Of course it isn't as good as a full frame sensor body, but that wasn't the point. The point is that it is very good-opinions will always differ on that, but I've NEVER had one client ever complain about noise/grain on any image. It's something that photographers obsess about-similar to blown highlights and bokeh...

I tend to agree. The ability to get that certain undefinable moment is far more important then any technical IQ issue. I've seen people pay a lot for bad IQ because what they are looking for has nothing to do with what we obsess about on these forums.

It's a great camera, but it's not for everyone.

As for how far I might up the ISO, I try to stay at 800 or below, but find myself at 1600 a lot.

It depends on the scene content and a lot of other factors, certainly for family events and personal fun time, I could accept the noise levels at a higher ISO than 3200.
