Jeff,
Generally speaking, you're point @ contrast is relevant. In this case, the Red Channel, just struck me as the black night sky (i.e. no red @ all blue), with the moon in it, converting this to a night m0no scene from a day color scene.
It isn't fully complete, and would need work to make the transformation to a mono night scene, but it just struck me @ potential, when I looked at the Red Channel.
Nothing earth shattering, just my imagination.
Also, given your nice lighting "under" the wings ... that doesn't come from the overhead skylight (which is the blue contribution). Therefore, it must (deductive reasoning) have been coming from more direct sunlight (i.e. greater warmth). In that regard, realizing that we are looking at two different sets of lighting (the blue @ sky vs. the warm/neutral @ gull), channel separation can be an opportunity for dynamic / dramatic variance.
You'll have to use your imagination (and PP skills), but I just wondered if you saw the possibilities when looking at the Red Channel. Again ... a bit imaginative ... albeit, maybe a bit too much so.
