p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · TIFF's in Gimp?

I'm having a problem with tiffs in Gimp. I convert them with Silkypix or DPP, and when I open them, I get a small thumbnail of the image on the image's upper left, which it seems to apply USM on.

This happens with 8 & 16 bit tiffs from DPP, and 16 bit from Silkypix.

The preview for USM doesn't show it up close really, probably because its working on that tiny thumbnail.

Is there any way to fix this? Perhaps by changing a setting?

I've read tiffs are better for USM, is this true, or are jpegs about the same?

It may be that Silkypix or DPP is embedding a thumbnail in the tiff, and _that_ is what is getting opened in GIMP? Is it that you're seeing a small image when opening in GIMP as opposed to the full resolution you were expecting? Or is it that you're seeing the full resolution image with a thumbnail also in the upper left (if that's the case, is there more than one layer open)?

Gimp is opening the thumbnail as an extra layer. When importing, there should be a dialogue box that offers to import some or all of the Tiff, as separate images or layers of one image.
