p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon FD 100-300 L any info ?

Hi,

I've been keeping an eye out for a C/Y 100-300 for several years now - but no luck. The few that come up for sale either have issues (rear element fogging) or are out of my budget.
Now I've seen that Canon made an 100-300L in FD mount and given the pouplarity of th 80-200L I'm wondering whether this could be an alternative to the Vario-Sonnar and whether anyone can offer some info on the FD 100-300L, and maybe even some samples on an A7 series body.

Thanks

I heard the EF100-300L is quite good, but doesn't know if it shared the optical formula with FD version. A small 100-300mm lens is indeed very useful for travel.

Its light weight (IMO too light), its darn sharp and no CA. Fluorite element and shows good contrasts. If you are happy with MF, its a good one. F/5.6 isn't exactly lightning quick, but its excellent wide open. I use all my FD tele lenses wide open.

I prefer the 500mm though, but sometimes the 100-300 comes in handy. Not perfect and all cropped.

Thanks Danny. Those are looking good, especially given the high pixel density on the E-M10. Should perform well on the A7.

The FD 100-300/5.6 L appears to have the same optical formula as the EF 100-300/5.6 L. The FD has a macro mode with MFD of 1m (normal MFD = 2m), while the EF has MFD 1.5m and no 'dedicated' macro mode.

I've owned a couple of copies of the EF 100-300/5.6L. It's very sharp and has slow AF (which doesn't matter for this discussion).

OTOH, the Contax CZ 100-300/4.5-5.6 has noticeably better IQ than the EF 100-300/5.6L, and the CZ is a lot more expensive.
