p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 5DsR crop vs. 7D II

Has anyone compared the 5DsR crop vs. 7D II with a long tele? Is the 7D II any cleaner at ISO 1600 and above or are they about the same? I avoided the 7D II initially because it was not available when needed and then subsequently due to the high proportion of AF defects, so I can't compare it myself.

From my preliminary tests of the 5DsR, the inherent sharpness is quite high. Perhaps less sharpening is necessary, which should be better for luminance noise.

I would love to know also.

I would be more than a little surprised if they were any different than the 5Ds is from the 5DsR.

There is very little difference if any in the noise department between the two 5DS, this is based on personal conversations with Chuck Westfall and Rudy Winston.

Studying the studio samples @ DPR, the 5DsR seems to show a slightly more distinct noise pattern than the 5Ds (i.e. higher contrast) ... but both look pretty close to the noise pattern in the 6D once comped for size / print ... all look better than the 7D II (comp sizing).

I assume the 5Ds and 5DsR have the same sensor, but the 7D II is different.

RustyBug,
It was my impression that the OP was actually asking for non comparable sizing. In other words the 5dsr in 1.6x crop mode vs 7dii. The purpose would be to determine the best long reach camera.

Okay, then just click, the "Full" button and they look more comparable to the 7D II than the 6D, with the S version showing the reduction from the AA filter's contrast reduction.

Something like ... tiny pixels are still tiny pixels. Crank up the 6D beyond 12800 and things really start to reveal themselves. (Note: 5Ds & 5DsR don't go beyond 12800 in the comparison).

Thanks. That's a pretty interesting test they perform, but the FF and cropped sensors are not at the same magnification.

+1 @ variance(s) ... that's (assumed) why they have the three diff viewing options @ Full / Comp / Print.

Any other variants of comparison a person might suggest / want ... I suppose a person could just go buy / rent the gear themselves and make their own comparisons.

Hey, ya gets what ya pays for.
