p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Raven over canyon

These were taken from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon at the east end looking west into the haze in the afternoon.

Dealing with the haze is a PITA. I may try out latest version of Photoshop which has a dehaze tool. If you have experience with the dehaze tool please comment.

Thank you,

Morris

I like both Morris, but the b&w does have a slight edge ~ Ron

Lots of potential in those images Morris. The new Dehaze tool can work wonders on images like this. Or not. ! I have tried it on a number of images. Sometimes magic, other times not so much. Still haven't figured out why. I just have to try it image by image for now I guess.

Both of these are outstanding. I like the B&W most but they both work well. What I like is the canyon seems so well composed and the raven is just in the right place to add that living element.

I like the color one for the geographic layers are more visible in it.

I like them, Morris. The best shots I've seen of the Grand Canyon were taken in the early morning.--Paul

I like the color one as it show more depth, Morris.
I used the Dehaze filter once and I have played with it a bit. not having any pics with haze I used for dirty glass . What I noticed is that it has the tendency to over-saturate the image and it requires further adjustment in CR (being a CR filter) to get it right, but it does a very good job. Do your normal PP in CR first and then use the Dehaze filter and do some more adjustments as required.
Here is an example: the bottom one is the final edit, not just Dehaze. I'll take it down once you have seen it.
Socrate

P.S. Have you tried Unsharp Mask with high amount and radius to get rid of the haze?

Thank you Steve,
It's also the first revision and they have a history of improving the tools over time

Thank you Gordon,
When I saw the raven I composed and waited for it to go where I wanted and/or felt it looked good.

Thank you Herb,
I agree I was able to bring the layers out better in the color version. There were a lot of attempts for both images.

Thank you Socrate,

I'm going to give it a try when I get a chance. I'm busy catching up after being away for 3 weeks.

Morris,

Sometimes a polarizing filter can de-haze in camera.

Great shots.

I don't have any dehaze tool experience Morris but.... some other tips; adjusting contrast, blacks, WB in combination will help. I would imagine the dehaze tool does something similiar automatically? I do like the b&w version here the better of the two. Great to see you getting out into the wide open spaces

Morris,

I really like the effect of layering that the second image in color provides, based on texture and color nuances.

Thanks for posting it.

Thank you Phil,
The color gave me a bit more to work with to separate the layers

Morris, I took your image and pushed it a bit more. Of course it would look a lot better if this was done with a large file. I'll take it down in a little while if you like

Thank you Tim,

By any chance did you record the steps you took. I like the more natural look to the haze as it's not as blue as mine.

Well...... kind of. I first desaturated the blues on the whole image and mildly adjusted the contrast. Then created a luminosity and color layer, I have an action for that so it's one click, something I highly recommend. I then selected luminosity layer, copied it to a new layer and burned in the sky 100%, then adjusted the opacity of the burn layer to 20% or so. Used the same technique for the background (deeper blue) bits of the canyon. Then selected the color layer, set a selection on the background deeper blues and desaturated the blues on only those.

That's roughly it. I understand it sounds like a lot of fussing but with actions I use the whole thing only took a few minutes. Even without the actions making overall changes and then carefully selected changes, using mostly contrast and saturation adjustments you can clear up a lot of haze.
