p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon lenses on Abe's of Maine

Hi all,

Apologies in advance if this is the incorrect board. If so, feel free to refer me to the correct place to post.

Our family is currently upgrading gear for our family slot machine sales business and have the 24-70 2.8 II in mind as it fits out needs. While researching prices at various vendors, we noticed that the pricing information on this lens was all across the board with Abes of Maine being one of the lowest, and yet one of the highest priced vendors for this item.

Listing 1

http://www.abesofmaine.com/item.do?item=CN247028II&id=CN247028II&&kbid=*

This model is priced at $1495
SKU #: CN247028II | Part #: 5175B002
Brand New Factory Fresh Import Mode
I'm guessing this is grey market and would be the reason the price is so low?

Listing 2

http://www.abesofmaine.com/item.do?item=CN247028IIU&id=CN247028IIU&&kbid=*

This model is $2399
SKU #: CN247028IIU | Part #: 24-70 2.8II USA
Brand New, USA Warranty.
It appears the price is higher as this is a USA model and not an import.

Our family is familiar with import vs US, however we are wondering if the price is different due to listing 1 being a 'grey market' model? There is a significant pricing difference here.

Also, we were interested in knowing whether it was worth purchasing from this vendor and if they have a good reputation on FM? Reviews seem to be across the board online, but we've usually somewhat skeptical of reviews since they tend to go from 1 star to 5 stars.

Any feedback or thoughts would be appreciated!

- Matt

I've had good luck at canon price watch. They have it from an authorized dealer for 1649AR. That is how I would spend my money if I were buying new.

As always when shopping for camera gear on line, caveat emptor

I personally like to stick to B&H, Adorama, BuyDig, Amazon or a local store. I don't know what it is about on-line camera sales and shady vendors but they're everywhere.

They are slimy Bait & Switch con artists!

They will call and try to get you to upgrade to the USA option. If you say no, the grey version will **never** ship.

They "game" Reseller Ratings, you can't trust that any more. Look to Yelp for accurate Ratings. They are almost all pretty bad:

They seem to mainly be in NY or around there.

I bought from Abe of Maine once. I wasn't scammed but it wasn't a good experience, either. They never notified me about anything. 2 weeks later the item arrived, poorly packed. I wouldn't recommend them.

Abes went bankrupt a couple of years ago, and the new owners do not have a good reputation. You may hear from some who had a good experience in the past, but be aware of the new ownership.

I got hosed and was involved with a chargeback tug-of-war with them for months: my card company would chargeback and Abe's would sneak the charge back in the next month until they were finally blocked.

Interesting, they were at about a 3* rating when I posted the link, now they're up to 5 in just a few short days? Maybe my memory is bad. . Regardless, a quick perusal of the comments exposes them as a classic bait and switch operator.

I am thinking Fred banned them from advertising here. Here is a link
from several months ago.
