I'm purchasing the new 15" MBP (within the next couple of days), any advise on upgrades or storage? Is the 1TB worth the extra $500? Is anyone editing locally and then using a Thunderbolt drive? Other thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated!

I use a USB 3.0 drive to host my entire photo archive

I mirror this onto a NAS as a form of backup

I'm stuffering this year with a USB 3.0 external. Hopefully next year I'll be able to pick up a external SSD at a reasonable price. 500gb should be enough to handle all my working files.

I got the 512 SSD and use a Thunderbolt 2 Lacie 7200 rpm drive for my working photos. I like a full catalog of my photos with smart preview so that is almost 200g on its own I think. I started this way so I couldn't tell you how much performance I gain. But I am happy with the setup.

Not wedding shooter, but just keep OS and apps on MBP SSD and working files on Thunderbolt RAID 0 that backs itself up automatically every hr, then to secondary backup once a day, etc, etc. Faster storage worth more to me on laptop than size of storage.

I have a "docking station" that lets me use one thunderbolt port and the power port to create a modular desktop system with external monitor, keyboard, and storage. So basically I have a standard desktop, except that my machine can also be unplugged and used standalone on location. My understanding is that if you are using spin drives for storage, USB3 is faster than than the drives. I am running a 2 TB RAID1 with spin drives for working files and daily storage, and hot swap external spin drives for archive storage. I keep my LR library and presets, etc on an SSD. I also create smart previews, so I can work without being attached to the spin drives. I love it, but YMMV.

I run my system off a 512 ssd connected via usb3
the internal fusion drive was re-formated and now houses smart previews for my editing clients.
I have a bunch of thunderbolt drives hooked up that house main/backup files of my own.
Get a SSD no matter what for your system... the fusion drives / regular drives are slow.
Then get TB for editing.
My new machine flies like superman.

Thanks guys, I have an SSD, do the new machines allow you to install one? I have a data doubler if those work on the new machines? I guess my question is what is proprietary and what can you install into the machine as far as hard disk, or is it a complete external game?

I have a 5k iMac 27" with a 512GB SSD installed for programs & a few other crap. As for everything else, I use a 3TB G-Technology thunderbolt drive as a MAIN editing drive. As for backup, I use a Newer Technology Voyager SATA reader and pop in my 3.5" drives in there. It's USB 3.0 so it is fast, IF not faster than my thunderbolt G-Drive! I have two SATA drives because I backup my photos TWICE, totaling to 3 copies of files. I find this to be the best solution. Forget about them Drobo's, other bays, etc. I've tried them, waste of money.
Just get a good, reliable drive as your main and use any SATA drives for backup. SATA drives are cheap nowadays anyway.

I purchased transcend upgrade package for retina macbook pro. Much cheaper than the original upgrade option. Everything works reliable so far. The unmounted original ssd also serves as a "luxury usb thumbdrive" with the enclosure provided.
