Back again. I returned to the site last week and tried to get the same shot. I was between heavy rain and had poor light and in my haste, I did not get the exact composition. I was headed to a different place for sunset so I did not linger. The whole idea was to solve or at least improve the left edge softness of the previous shot which is well shown and discussed earlier in the thread.
As you recall, I focused at the end of the log at f8 or on the mountain at f9 and always at 17mm. Both had good near far but poor edge around those trees. So this time I went to f11 and focused on the trees. I think this made a major improvement on edge performance without hurting the near or far. It seems to me that with an UWA lens, the edge needs to have critical focus while the central part of the image is less critical and benefits from the deep dof of the focal length.
I used live view focus and placed it on the problem trees. I also show the area even further left and of course the log for near and the mountain for far.
