With the upcoming FW4.0 (some may have already tested the leaked version), which of the following is better for general family photos and kids sports photos?

1. 18-55mm F2.8-4 and 55-200mm F3.5-4.8.
2. 18-135mm F3.5-5.6

Question is purely on image quality and how well the lens take advantage of the new AF of FW4.0.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

The 55-200 is a great lens but too long focal length for most family photos, especially indoors. On the other hand it would be great for outdoor sports with that long reach. I also have the 18-55 and it is a great all-purpose lens. It is very sharp and a good wide aperture for low light indoors.

If the question mainly concerns pure image quality, the combination of 18-55 and 55-200 should deliver higher image quality. The 18-135 probably has less image quality but it's a more convenient lens to use due to its zoom range.

How would anyone know how well lenses perform with FW 4.0 when it isn't officially available and in use?

Coming from Canon teles and 1D bodies, I find my X-T1 and 55-200 combo underwhelming for sports use. Continuous AF is poor, the lens re-racks under various conditions, basically good for single shot AF of more stationary subjects (think batters at the dish or post-toddlers on a soccer pitch). Looking forward to FW 4.0 in this regard.

Any of the Fuji lenses will perform well for family shots with the current firmware, just pick your focal length and speed requirements.

I didn't care for the 18-135 due mainly to the sub-par image quality (as measured by Fuji X lens standards). I bought it and returned it. Although I do have a strong preference for Fuji primes, the combo of the 18-55 and the 55-200 should serve you well for your stated purpose. (I might add that for LS work, the 10-24/4 is excellent.)

Looking forward to the FW4.0 too. It seems that a few people have already tested a beta version. For kids sports, I am using a Canon 40D and 70-200mm F4 lens. Still waiting to move to all Fuji when the AF improves and I will acquire a longer focal length Fuji zoom.

The 18-55 is by far the best mid range zoom in the fuji lens stable in my personal experience.
