Hi. I have to admit I am not too fussed with my processing of this photo.

My Border Collie is very camera shy, so I kind of tricked him into allowing me to photo him by tossing a ball and calling him back from it, hence the 400mm lens requirement.

It is handheld so it is probably not as sharp as it could be, but, it's almost the best of what he'll let me do. He normally hides when he sees a camera, whether it be a DLSR or a phone, makes no difference to him.

Here is a link to the original: https://www.dropbox.com/s/krur4ppzcgq1q9l/2015-06-19_IMG_4426_70D_400_5.6_125_800.cr2?dl=0

I've also included what I did to it in LR5, I've also added the lens profile corrections, and cropped.

What would you do?

Thanks and regards.....Pete

My end result.

Critters can be a problem like that. Maybe you can train him to be less camera shy? Even when pets aren't camera shy, waiting for them to strike a good pose can try the patience of Job.

I don't use LR, so I'll leave PP suggestions to others.

Pete,
I tried going thru Dropbox to play with the full CR2 but both LR4 and CS4 can't open the image!
Not sure why. Properties does show it as a CR2 file.
Corrupted?

To me, the first issue is color temp. while the coat may be bluish-black at its darkest, it looks too blue as shown. I chose a point on the nose for a potential neutral black. I think the noses generally have less blue than might be mixed in on the coat.
I agree with attempt to recover some highlights and needs some selective sharpening of the eyes, tongue. I also reduced some of the vibrance, feeling the grass was too rich and detracting for the subject.
More could be done with more time, larger file, etc. The mood is great but the image is a bit soft and whites not well controlled.

Below is a quick LR4 re-work with some screen shots, taken from your web-posted version.
First brush was for the legs, second for the eyes, tongue.
In addition I added a bit of vignette (not shown)

Scott

Wow, thanks Scott. That's much better. I really didn't notice the blue tint before.

Glad you liked.
The eye contact and tongue out make the image, IMO. Worth keeping at it for a sharper catch and -EV for those whites next time.

Agree with Scott; the blue was killing me. lol

That said, after adjustments, I did try to do some cleanup/repair (note, I said try. lol). Much more tlc is needed.

+1 @ Blue ... took the Temp to around 12250 and the Tint to 40 in ACR before going into PS (i.e. no LR for me).

Other tweaks are mostly insignificant compared to the WB shift magnitude, although I did pull back the yellows a touch.

I'd suggest perhaps leaving just a hint of blue in his coat. I've got a black rabbit and outdoors it's remarkable how the sky reflects a blue cast to his shiny coat. It's a case when the intellect doesn't necessarily tell you the truth.

Yep the blue cast jumped out at this color challanged guy. I like your edit.

I've shot a lot of pictures of my dog running towards me. Usually bribing her with irresistable treats helps.

One note looking at your camera settings:
1/125 second is way too slow to freeze the action. I try to stay around 1/640 for a fast trot and at least 1/800 to get "4 off the floor"

OK; a retry. Kept the adaptive contrast out of the equation for the most part this time. I did re-introduce a little of the blue since Karen convinced me of that. Still, i tried to lower the emphasis of the grass some. I could just all out kill it, but wanted to keep the image at the overall intent of the original.

Thanks, I like it, I have more yellow in my last edit than you.

But where did those red freckles in the grass come from? I know I don't have any red flowers in my grass.

lol

When adjusting the colors of the grass, the oranges popped out and I liked it. Personal choice yet again.
